Strengthening Communities Actions and Responses towards Environmental Degradation
Strengthening Communities Actions and Responses towards Environmental Degradation
The project seeks to, within the next two years, curb degradation and reclaim 5000m2 of highly eroded areas in the Senqu and Khubelu river catchments within the Molika-liko and Khalahali community councils. Though the project will be based mostly in two villages and seeks primarily to adress issues surrounding land degradation, it has far reaching implications in that it impacts on the general environment by reducing the pressure and over exploitation of other natural resources by communities as their livelihoods are compromised thus sustaining local biodiversity, improving quality of water, hence costs and sustainability of water projects downstream as sedimentation is reduced in dams, contributing to the fight against climate change as more plants will be planted thus increasing the carbon sink.

Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
A significant proportion of the land to be rehabilitated is rangeland and as such, herders will be involved throughout the paroject particulalarly in rangeland rehabilitation activities.
Notable Community Participation
Due to the nature of the intervention?s long term goal, the need for community ownership and involvement, capacity building of existing groups, associations and whole communities to sustain the initiatives will feature greatly in the initial phase of the project. ?This will include training and supporting local villagers to establish and maintain small nurseries which will be the key suppliers of some of the project inputs. ?With support from local authorities, communities will identify susceptible and affected areas to be dealt with and protected. Identification of such has sites has been undertaken as part of pre implementation preparations. ?Design and implement small community driven initiatives aimed at protecting the environment while establishing individual and group initiatives that will improve their livelihoods. ?Though secondary to the project goal, the project aims to support local CSO initiatives that seek to improve member socio-economic status, by helping in organisational development.
