PV electrification of Kwaruhombo Health Centre and Changalikwa Secondary School, Bagamoyo
Context: Both Kwaruhombo Health Centre (KHC) and Changalikwa Secondary School (CSS) are located in remote areas in Bagamoyo District. Grid electricity is not expected in the foreseeable future. Lack of electricity affects services provided by KHC particularly at night. Patients that go to the KHC for medical services are forced to contribute kerosene for lighting. Maternity services are the most affected because longer hours are required. Risks of new infections when providing services with kerosene lamps are greater.
CSS is a boarding school. The school depends on a 2KVA gasoline generator that runs during study hours. Running of a generator costs Tshs. 5,250 per day. This cost is passed over to the parents. Besides being costly, use of gasoline increases emission of GHG in the atmosphere.
Installation of PV electricity at both institutions will ease lighting problems. It will also reduce carbon emissions by kerosene lamps and gasoline generator. In addition, it will demonstrate on how solar power can be used for lighting in off-grid locations.
About the Proponent: REDESO is a local NGO which was incorporated in June 1998. Since her inception, the NGO has been one of the key implementing partners to UNHCR specialized in installing solar electricity in refugee camps. The NGO has worked in Ngara refugee camp and Chogo settlement in Tanga.
Project Objective: To demonstrate on how off-grid rural institutions can access modern energy services through installation of PV electricity systems at two sites in Bagamoyo district.
Implementation Strategy:
Install PV electricity at :
1. Kwaruhombo Health Centre, Bagamoyo
2. Changalikwa Sec. School, Bagamoyo
