Charcoal Briquette Training to Reduce Fuel Energy and Firewood Consumption and Livelihood Enhancement of Forest users Group Project
People in the rural areas are predominantly using the traditional energy sources such as fuel wood (79.3%), agricultural waste (11.1%), and animal dung (8.5%) all used for primarily for cooking, which contributes about 95.9% of the total energy consumption in Nepal. It is commonly stated that products from Collaborative and community forests are for all forest users group (FUG) members, regardless of family needs, number of cattle or their economic conditions. In some cases, people belonging to the so-called lower, backward ethnic and minority groups are deprived of their participation in the local FUGs. Thus lack of firewood from nearby forest, Muslim community and other minorities in Parsa are using animal dung cakes for cooking. Thus as an alternative to animal dung cake, bio-briquette from locally available waste such as Eupatorium would not only fullfills the household energy demand but may also give employment opportunity for the local muslim women.
The grantee also being established as welfare of Muslim Women, the project can highlight emic perspective of development in Muslim community. The objective of the project is to equip the muslim women to produce the biobriquette and link the product to the market.
