POP in Jbeil Caza: identification of hotspots and raising awareness campaign. The Project aims To mitigate the potential risks of POPs, Byblos Ecologia decided to carry out a project with three main aims:
? Identifying POPs sources and hotspots in Jbeil Caza
? Creating a national network and action plan to reduce/eliminate
POPs in Lebanon
? Raising awareness against POPs in the Jbeil Caza and nationwide.
The project specifically aims at:
-Conducting an exhaustive survey for collecting data on the potential sources of POPs in Jbeil Caza (types, sources, hot spots, location?)
-Raising awareness among local communities (municipalities, farmers, industries, universities, schools etc?) on POPs hazards on human health and the environment.
-Creating an Anti-POPs network, at the national and Mediterranean level for expertise exchange (Website, Internet Forum...)
-Developing an action plan with other NGOs to eliminate and reduce POPs at the national level
-Lobbying the government, NGOs and municipalities to implement laws and regulations concerned with POPs, reducing and controlling the uses and disposal of POPs containing substances (tires burning, medical waste incineration, uncontrolled use of pesticides?)
-Building the capacities of municipalities, health practitioners, agriculture cooperatives, interior security forces, NGOs on identifying substances containing POPs and mitigating their effects?
-Disseminating information especially among NGOs, experts, academics, stakeholders ?
-Generating a list of POPs and non POPs containing -agrochemicals that will be distributed to farmers, agrochemical suppliers, internal security forces and municipalities.
