North Coast Community Climate Change Adaptation Through Ecological Farm and Mangrove Rehabilitation in Brebes Sub-District, Central Java
North Coast Community Climate Change Adaptation Through Ecological Farm and Mangrove Rehabilitation in Brebes Sub-District, Central Java
PProject Development Goals:
1. Reactivating unproductive rice fields;
2. Materializing the capacity and independency of coastal farmers in preparing ecological farming system adaptive to climate change;
3. Existing coastal revitalization through mangrove plantation
4. Existing awareness and independency among coastal ecosystem communities in conserving and utilizing coastal natural resources
5. Decreasing the dependency towards external means of production (chemical fertilizer, pesticide, and seeds)

Project Development Objectives:
1. Shifting farmer behaviours as the result of existed agreement to implement adaptive cultivation pattern through ecological farm using varieties suitable with the characteristics of the area.
2. Involving community in rice cultivation activities and coastal rehabilitation
3. Rehabilitating coastal area through mangrove plantation and other productive plants such as sapodilla, breadfruit, and kedondong.
4. Endorsing village-level policies regarding mangrove forest conservation.

Expected Outputs:
1. Established demonstration plot for TADAS paddy seeds cultivation (5,000 m2) and the development of minimum 5 hectares demonstration plot in each village.
2. Agreement of adaptive cultivation pattern implementation through ecological farm
3. Existing means of production (fertilizer, pesticide, and seeds) produced by community group
4. Established 3 hectares seedlings and mangrove forest rehabilitation area in each village
5. Existed village regulation regarding mangrove forest conservation in each village
6. Existed map of mangrove forest area and community-intervened management area
7. Evaluation will be conducted at the end of program and every harvest season with the learning pattern based on participative experience.

Activities to be conducted:
1. Cultivating TADAS paddy seeds according to IPPHTI network experiences in other coastal area;
2. Developing several paddy varieties suitable with climate change impacts (dryness resistance, short harvesting cycle, salinity resistance);
3. Promoting several ecological farming methods (water save, seed save, pesticide free, chemical free);
4. Introducing and demonstrating cultivation pattern adjustment to season and climate change;
5. Introducing and demonstrating sea water intrusion tackling and method in productive farming area;
6. Triggering initiatives for production supply (organic fertilizer, herbal pesticide, paddy seeds development, salinity resistance horticulture);
7. Strengthening farmer group to increase organizational capacity;
8. Forming local farmer cadres as farmers? guide;
9. Publishing and disseminating ecological and climate change adaptive farming method for IPPHTI network;
10. Rehabilitating coastal area through mangrove plantation and other productive plants.

Project Participants and/or beneficiaries:
Direct : 30 peoples for group, 50 people in each village group (total 150 farmers)
Indirect : +/- 1,200 Housholds located in 3 villages
