Community-Based Domestic Waste Management to Conserve Mangrove Forest in East Coast of Surabaya
Project Development Goals:
Planning program to empower community in developing Mangrove forest in East Coast of Surabaya into conservation area as well as barrier for Surabaya city and will be functioned as habitat for wild species, especially migratory and endangered birds; and empower community in developing waste management project.
Expected Outputs:
1. Existing working group to manage mangrove foerst conservation area and liquid waste and garbage management
2. Socializing program to organized communities regarding the importance of conservation area and waste management
3. Existing working plan of integrated mangrove forest conservation and waste management, including the demonstration plot area and replication of activities as examples of the neighboring villages
4. Existing community-based monitoring and evaluation plan
Activities to be conducted:
1. Establishing community groups to implement the activities
2. Planning the activities for mangrove forest conservation, including planting mangrove seeds in various types such as Bakau (Rhizophora mucronata), Api-api (Avicenia marina), and Pidada (bruguera sp) in eastern coastal area of Surabaya
3. Conducting initial socialization to support local government in declaring Coastal Area of Surabaya as conservation area
4. Establishing village-based planning towards Mojo Kampung as ?Zero Waste Kampong?. The planned activities are including:
a. Building 10 unit home-based waste management (@15 houses) using ABR method
b. Building 20 wetland to process waste from septic tank (black water)
c. Building 20 biofilter to process waste from septic tank (black water)
d. Building 500 biopores to catch rainwater
e. Ecological conservation in Mojo Kampong by planting vegetation with ecological value as pollutant absorber, producing oxygen, water absorbtion, family medical plants, and productive plants
f. Creating Takakura basket and semi-aerob composter to process organic waste as organic fertilizers
5. Planning the activities for ?say no to plastic bag? campaign for community in Mojo Kampung to start using cloth bag
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries:
Direct : 50 volunteers from Komunitas Nol Sampah, 500 residents of RT 03 and RT 05, Mojo Sub-district
Indirect : 14,364 households of Mojo Kampong residents, Wonorejo Village, Rungkut Sub-district
