Involving local communities in combating climate change
Context:
Poverty reduction and national development in Africa are held back by variability and extremes of weather and climate. The lives of people are dependent on weather and climate, which are not only highly variable and unreliable but also expected to change in the longer term.
According to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), the long term changes of climate are mainly a result of human activity. Furthermore, it is argued that achievements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will only be possible if local communities are better equipped to mitigate the impacts of weather and climate variability and change.
About the Proponent:
The Centre for Weather and climate Applications and research (CWCAR) is a registered NGO. It was established in 2007 in order to further the applications of weather and climate information in various sectors of the economy with the view to increasing knowledge and understanding on climate change and its impacts.
Project Objective:
To enhance people?s knowledge and understanding on climate change in order to increase their capacity in responding to effects and impacts that are associated with it.
