Organization of the remote cattle breeding to decrease pressure on the pastures round the settlement and to prevent land degradation in the Syr-Darya settlement, Shardarinsky area, Southern Kazakhstan
Shardara district is located in the southern part of Kazakhstan, bordering Uzbekistan, border with the Kyzyl-Kum desert. The population of 65000 people, the total area of pastures - 60,000 ha. Today the intensive grazing on nearby pastures, grazing radius of up to 7 km. The cattle are grazing relief for the whole year on the same sites. All this led to the fact that the yield of pastures fell from 4 t / ha to 1,5 - 2,0 t / ha of forage and availability of livestock grazing forage is only in the spring. Due to lack of fodder, high cost of hay and to provide necessary food animals smallholders livestock begin to graze cattle on pastures around auls as soon as the snow begins to . This practice in negative because of decreasing of vegetation during the growing season, which leads to spillage of grass most valuable forage grasses and pastures fail. This reduces the productivity of grazing land, exacerbating their degradation and desertification.
Project aim:
To demonstrate sustainable pastures management in the Syrdarya settlement due to the out-run cattle breeding in purposes of decreasing pressure on the pastures round the settlement.
Project tasks:
- Organization of distant grazing of LC members cattle of Syrdaria village in the sands of the Kyzyl Kum
- Conducting of public informational environmental activities and dissemination of work practices for sustainable pasture resources management among members of LC of the surrounding auls
- Providing of the reserve hay stock for the winter and early spring periods by planting alfalfa on irrigated plots of arable land
Project results:
- Selected area in the sands of the Kyzyl Kum for organizing distant grazing of Syrdaria LC cattles
- Get the agreement between all interested parties (NGO "Syrdaria, akimat, etc.) on joint project activities
- 170 head of cattle, 800 sheep and goats and 40 head of horses moved to 1000 ha distant pastures (45 km from village)
- Load of animals on pastures around aul decreased by 7 - 10%
- Created conditions for decreasing of further degradation of pasture around the auls and pasture vegetation recovery.
- Published recommendation brochure in Kazakh and Russian languages about the benefits of mobile grazing cattle in the sands of the Kyzyl Kum
- A demonstration workshop for LC members of the surrounding villages
- Residents of village realised the feasibility of the development of distant grazing due to significant differences in the condition of the animals that use pastures sands Kyzylkum and pastures around the aul. Members of the MO formed the notion of a clear dependence: state of pastures - quality and quantity of feed - the level of affluence in the community
