Creating Sustainable Livelihoods Opportunities for Petite Savanne Residents
The Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation (COMPACT) Project was launched in
2001. The project funded by the UNDP and UNESCO and is implemented by the UNDP through the
GEFSGP. By providing financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the
environment, while simultaneously enhancing people?s well being and livelihoods, the SGP demonstrates
that global environment problems can best be addressed, if local people are involved and there are direct community ownerships and benefits to be obtained.
A major aspect of the project focuses on providing an appropriate facility for which Community Furniture,Heritage Trio and the Village Council could conduct training activities and small business empowerment activities. Together with the Petite Savanne Village Council and the Community Furniture Project,Heritage Trio is recommending a single building to host the activities of Heritage Trio, the Community Furniture Group, and other appropriate activities of the Village Council. The building will be complemented by the provision of necessary equipment and raw materials, and adequate furnishing to accommodate thespecial needs of the disabled. Directly under this project, the building will be used to house the woodwork factory, the sewing studio, the craft workshop, the cosmetology centre, and the training workshops. The project will allow Heritage Trio to provide training to women in the area, especially single mothers with advanced sewing skills and craft making
