Improved lighting through the use of Compact Florescent Lamp (CFL)

The aim of the project is to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions in home electricity use through getting selected households to switch from the use of incandescent bulbs to Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs) which are more efficient in energy utilisation for lighting purposes. This switch will not only directly translate into reductions in GHG emissions but equally in reduction in the quantities of fuel imported for electricity generation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

During the execution of the project, the capacities of the NGO implementing the project as well as the members of the households selected and staff of The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) will be greatly enhanced.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

It is envisaged that the successful conclusion of this project will generate interest within NAWEC to promote the switch from the use of incandescent lamps to CFLs which is not nly more environmentally sound but more economical in terms of financial reductions in home energy lighting.

Policy Impact

The outcome of this project will be used to lobby for policy changes by government and local municipal authorities for the adoption of this technology. The findings of the project will provide the basis for future dialogues between the NGO and government.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims to demonstrate the efficient use of electricity in home lighting through the promotion of the significant savings that will be realised from switching from the use of incandescent lamps to CFL. The financial savings from this switch will serve as a catalyst for the adoption of this environmentally-friendly technology which would promote sustainable livelihoods in the long run.

Notable Community Participation

The project will be executed in a selected ward in the town of Brikama located in the Western Region of The Gambia. The households to be selected have agreed to participate voluntarily in the project with the intention of adopting the technology.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project will foster discussions and heighten public awareness of the topical issue of Climate Change and adaptation. As a result of this enhanced public awareness, the local initiatives that can be adopted to contribute to addressing Climate Change issues will be highlighted.

Project Results

Project launching and sensitization meetings with households completed.

1, 000 CFL bulbs in first round and 3, 000 CFL bulbs in second round supplied to 777 households to replace old incandescent bulbs completed. Originally, 500 household targeted.

Calculations showed that the project reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions from lighting using CFL bulbs by 252.62 tones.

Based on daily electricity consumption of 5 hours for lighting purposes, the project was able to save 865.145 KWh of electricity per day. This amount of electricity saved can be used to connect others on the waiting list to the electricity grid.

The project ha brought about an increased awareness of energy efficiency through the use of energy saving devices which can bring about many added benefits both to the consumer and the environment.
