Combating land degradation in the North Bank Region through a programme of reaforestation

The goal of the project was to address the issue of deforestation which is a precursor to land degradation in the region by establishing two school nurseries and two woodlots in two communities in the area. The school nurseries supplied seedlings to other communities and schools in the area and shouldl be self sustaining in the long run through proceeds from the sale of the seedlings. The programme aimed to build the capacities of the participants in all aspects of tree planting and care for the environment.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

2 plant nurseries established under the project to provide seedlings to NGOs, individuals, communities and projects in the area.The sale of seedlings will sustain the nurseries in themselves.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

For the 2 schools selected, seedlings produced were offered for sale to other interested parties. There is currently a reportedly high demand for seedlings in the area and this will ensure the sustainability of the project in the long run.

Capacity - Building Component

For the project to be sustainable in the long run, skills of the project beneficiaries were enhanced through various capacity building activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Land degradation is an important issue in the project areas. land degradation is a complex issue with many dimensions affecting other focal areas such as biodiversity loss and climate change. These inter linkages were highlighted during project implementation.

Notable Community Participation

School going children in the two selected schools and villagers from the two selected communities for woodlot establishment were actively involved in all aspects of project implementation. This aspect ensured ownership of the project from the start of activities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The majority of the population in the area were small scale farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. As a result of land degradation, the majority of these farmers had witnessed a progressive decline in their farm outputs leading to reduce incomes over the years. With this project implementation, soil erosion on farmlands wouldl be reduced and crop outputs wouldl increase.

Project Results

2 tree nurseries established in 2 schools (Kuntair and Njaba Kunda) in the North Bank Region meant to supply seedlings to other schools and communities in the area. The 2 tree nurseries have been fenced and supplied with water sources to raise seedlings.

Two woodlots established in 2 communities (Pallen and Minteh Kunda) in the region.

Training for nursery attendants conducted in the 2 schools and 2 communities.

Garden materials and tools supplied to the 2 schools.

The project distributed over 20, 000 seedlings to schools and communities for planting during the tree planting festival in the area. The trees planted will contribute towards improving the tree cover and preventing the degradation of the land in the area.
