Reducing the use of persistant Organic Pollutants and related POPs Namely Lindane and Endosulphan through Promotion of the use of Bio Pesticides and Organic Manures
As the title suggests, this project was aimed towards the elimination of perspective organic pollutants like Lindane and Endosulphan since these chemicals were highly toxic and persistent and thus could kill people, damage their nervous and immune systems, cause cancer and reproductive disorders and at the same time hamper normal infant and child development. It also aimed to ensure more viable solution of waste disposal like composting to be used in agricultural fields.
Goal of the project:
? To focus on Meerut and Muzaffarnagar districts where extensive use of Lindane and Endosulphan in agricultural practices had been found
? Device ways and means to identify various alternatives to eliminate these pesticides
? To throw a major attention on the sugar mills of Western U.P this distributed these harmful pesticides.
This project had been initiated by the Janhit Foundation, covering the two districts of Meerut and Muzaffarnagar to eliminate the persistent organic pollutants namely Lindane and Endosulphan. The project was also directed towards acquiring knowledge about the quantum of pesticides used in each crop and also about the money spent on these pesticides, so that an effective cost benefit analysis could be made.
The objectives of the project were:
Creating awareness among the farmers about the deleterious effects of deadly pesticides and fertilizers like Lindane and Endosulphan
To motivate a total of about 400 farmers to switch over to alternatives like organic farming with the help of field researchers
? Constantly monitoring farmers? practices and assisting them to form Self Help Groups (SHG?s)
? Ensuring more viable solutions of waste disposal to deal with the problem of agricultural wastes
? Enhancing the income of farmers by assisting the sale of organic produce

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
A core team comprising of 3 experts was formed, which would provide guidance regarding the implementation of the project, as well as the technical know-how about the organic farming. In addition to these, experts from Universities and Institutes were also contacted to impart training to farmers. By facilitating the output to the market, the farmers were able to identify the demand, which motivated them to undertake organic produce in a sustained manner. Widespread publicity of all activities of the project was undertaken from the date of initiation and progress report on time-to time activities were also formulated.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
It is expected that once the farmers are convinced and has made a switch to organic farming they will continue to practice the same since their produce will be sold at a premium. By facilitating the produce to the market the farmers would be able to identify the demand in the market and will be motivated to keep on producing organic produce in a sustained manner.
