ICT (INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY) SOLUTION FOR LOCAL FARMERS TO PROMOTE AND EDUCATE CUSTOMERS ON IPM (INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT) PRODUCTS

Project Background:
As GEF SGP with partnership with Souteh village farmers and IGRA Institute in Mazandaran Province in Caspian Area initiated the production of IPM rice since 2004 practicing an eco-agriculture production in rice paddies . Fortunately this work is continuing and the practice has expanded in the area and has also been replicated in UNEP GEF Siberian Crane Wetland Project (SCWP) site in Fereydoonkenar and Ezbaran, and by CEP by involving provincial extension and research government office using the SGP Souteh site as their pilot. The quality control has been through selected testing and by selling directly to customers who were interested in quality products which are pesticide free.
The farmers have managed their sites and have accessed various markets and have developed links with buyers and now are ready to market their rice and linked products directly through a website. The purpose of this project is to give the locals farmers and their children access to a web tool to consolidate the network they have developed and to educate the customers on IPM products and the extend of usage of various pesticides and herbicides in the normal farming system.
The project activities are:
?Design and operation of a website on IPM products for sharing information to customers and farmers
?Database on customers with linkage to the site
?Publish seasonal newsletter with information on the trend of reduction of pesticide and fungicide in the area
?Design and publish brochure on IPM products
?Design packaging
?Establishing a seasonal local store for access by customers
?A testing programme on the products
