PARTICIPATION OF BENEFICIARIES OF GAVAN GAZI VEGETATION
IN CONSERVATION AND REAPING OF THIS SPECIES IN THE ZAGROS ALTITUDES (GAVAN GAZI)
Project Background
A planning grant was implemented SGP Project ?Planning Grant for Participation of Beneficiaries of Gavangazi Vegetation in the Integrated Management of Conservation and Reaping of this species in the Zagros Altitudes No.IRA-05-PG02 (10 PG)? which resulted in this proposal.
A rare pasture vegetation called Gavan Gazi (Asrragalus Adcendence Bois ) found in Zagros and parts of Iraq and Turkey produces a Gaz resin (Gaz Angabin) through the activity of a rare insect called Cyamophila discora Loginova. Due to excessive, untimely and using aggressive methods the natural balance has been affected and a natural predator Priorities spp bee has become active and the insect producing the Gaz resin is being threatened. The main habit
This resin has been an important ingredient in a famous Persian sweet called Gaz and has been a source of livelihood for the 3 million area villagers and nomads.
Project activities are:
Two project sites have been selected with consultation with the Extension Of Ministry of Agricultural Jihad, Natural Resource Organization, Provincial Organization of Agricultural Jihad in both provinces as the main remaining habitats of the insect. The sites are in Fereidan Isfahan province and in Kohrang Chahar Mahal Bakhtiyari Province both in Zagros area. Livelihood of the area nomads and also villagers greatly had depended on this resin and the plant itself. The results from the two sites will be compared.
The project aims to develop two pilots for:
?With participation of locals and the officials to conserve the Gavan Gazi in the two site
?Help the preservation of the insect producing the resin
?Correct the collection process and intervals of the resin
?By conservation of the Gavan Gazi will help the land degradation of the pastureland in the two sites in about 10,000 hectare of pasture land
?Help the livelihood of 30,000 nomads and the area villagers
?Seasonal newsletter on project progress
?Booklet on project output and lessons learned
?15 minute clip on project activities
