Mangrove Forest Conservation and Rehabilitation in Krueng Kuala Cungkoi Basin Using Alternative Briquette Fuel in Aceh
Ecological Threat :

Kuala Cangkoi River is one of River basin of Krueng Pase River and is sub-river basin Krueng Keureto estuaries in Kuala Cangkoi Village. Currently, 70% of mangrove habitat around Kuala Cangkoi sub-river basin is damaged long before tsunami disaster happened in Aceh on 26 December 2004. The damage of mangrove in Kuala Cangkoi was triggered by mangrove felling activities for traditional salt industry by communities from 3 (three) villages around Kuala Cangkoi sub-river basin. Approximately 95 Households are using mangrove wood as the main production fuel. Compared to kerosene, mangrove wood is easily find by the community and produced maximum energy for salt processing.

Project Development Goal:

Program planning to :

1. Decrease the utilization of mangrove wood by 95 households for salt production.
2. Shift energy utilization from mangrove wood to husk or coconut shell-based bio briquette through the application of innovative and proper technology that will help reducing massive mangrove felling activities;
3. Improve community economy lived around Kuala Cangkoi area through the rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystem which has various kind of fish, shell-fish, mollusc, crab, etc that can be utilized for milk fish and shell-fish cultivation;
4. Develop eco-tourism destination

Expected Outputs :

1. Decreased mangrove wood utilization by salt farmer as fuel for salt indyustry and increased the utlization and production of bio-briquette using local waste to meet the energy needs of community;
2. Conserved 30% of mangrove forest existed in Kuala Cangkoi river basin;
3. Raised community awareness regarding the important of mangrove existence in Kuala Canngkoi river basin to support the sustainability of future?s generation as well as increasing commnunity income from alternative product s.
