Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation for Indigenous Women in the Mayo Tsanaga and Diamaré Departments of the Extreme-Northern Province of Cameroon

The project proposes to build capacity in the targeted community of 5000 households in northern Cameroun regarding efficient use of firewood.
This will be done through a training of trainers and peer education approach in 15 community groups; as well as through the use of multimedia tools including community radio and community video.
The main activities include a training of trainers workshop in construction of efficient stoves and manufacturing fireless cookers for 30 trainers from 15 community groups member of AIWO CAN followed by a period of 3 months during which the 15 groups will be trained by the two trainees and the overall coordinator; the training of 10 persons from 5 community radios in environmental issues and developing radio programmes on climate change adaptation with particular focus on firewood efficiency; a mid-term review mission with UNESCO experts in environment and communication; and recording and disseminating photographic and video materials regarding the training and subsequent domestic application by the trainees.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Direct beneficiaries will include indigenous Mbororo women and indigenous women of mountains dwellers communities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The community radio managers trained on the creation of radio programmes on climate change, will produce radio programmes in local language for the sensitization of communities on climate change, biodiversity and land degradation. Information on energy efficiency is disseminated in 5000 households in the Extreme Northern Province through a multi-pronged approach of peer education, radio programmes and community photo/video.

Gender Focus

The project direct beneficiaries are 600 women to be trained in manufacturing and utilisation of fireless cookers and fuel-efficient clay stoves.

Capacity - Building Component

The project has several capacity building activities, such as those on a training in manufacturing the fireless cooker; constructing clay stoves (single pot and double pot); applying fuel-efficient techniques; utilising the technology and demonstrating the benefits. Community radios will receive a two-day training during a workshop in Maroua, which will include principles of climate change, energy efficiency and related topics; demonstration of the technology; and groupwork to design a radio programme ?package?

Notable Community Participation

Women members of the various communities are trained to be become trainers of other women of the communities.

Project Results

* More than 40 women, members of women groups trained as trainers (and comingfrom 15 women groups) and prepared to each facilitate a training in manufacturing the fireless cooker; constructing clay stoves (single pot and double pot); applying fuel-efficient techniques; utilising the technology and demonstrating the benefits of these new technologies.

*With the collaboration of the 40 trainers, in total 2566 have been fully trained in manufacturing and utilising fireless cookers and fuel-efficient clay stoves. Moreover 130 men were also involved in the community trainings made by the women trainers. The use of improved stoves do not claim to completely solve the crisis of firewood in the arid zones. It seems that the best solution corresponds to the implementation of improved stoves made of clay, the simplest and least expensive to build.

*Training of community radio managers on environmental issues: Reduce emission of ?Greenhouse gases? causing the planet to heat up ? mostly from industrialised countries; Use of techniques and technologies to adapt to changing climate ? less rainfall, higher temperatures are expected for northern Cameroon. Direct beneficiaries of this training are 13 men and 05 women who are all community radio managers.

*11 radio managers have been contracted to develop and broadcast a package of radio programmes on environmental awareness, and specifically on climate change and energy efficiency.
* An official ceremony was organised for the launching of climate change programmes broadcasting on the community radios.

* 50,000 Households have reduce firewood consumption by 50%, saving approx. 5000 tones of firewood annually.

* About 6500 households use energy-efficient stoves and fireless cookers on a daily basis. Information on energy efficiency is disseminated in 5000 households in the Extreme Northern Province through a multi-pronged approach of peer education, radio programs and community photo/video.

* As socio-economic impact of the project, in the communities beneficiaries of the project, men are very happy with the project for they said they are now able to save some finances since the clay stove consumes less firewood. The men also said that their women are free from bad smells due to the smoke coming out the traditional stoves using different types of fire wood for food preparation. Children are now free from burns and fire out breaks. The hygienic part of the project is what attracts most women to it and the women can easily create their own styles and shapes to suite their own life style.
Women in 2 villages covered by the project have developed the fireless cooker into an income generating activity.
