Conserving Biodiversity through Sustainable Land Management at Addis Alem Watershed
This project aims to conserve and manage the biodiversity resources of Addis Alem watershed around Choke area through integrated on-farm conservation approach. The mode of project implementation is by empowering the local community through awareness raising, training and practice and decentralization of all activities to watershed level in order to achieve improvements in key areas of environmental problems that affect their livelihoods. It also intends to address other associated environmental problems such as land degradation and climate change through soil and water conservation practices. The Choke Mountain is considered as the water tower of the Blue Nile Basin and it is an important biodiversity hotspot. Consequently, all those interventions are believed to contribute to sustainable land management, conservation of biological diversity in the locality and mitigation of climatic change at different levels by influencing the global climatic condition directly or indirectly. The project will be carried out for two years at Addis Alem watershed in Dede iyesus Kebele. It will promote sustainable land use practices, including improved agriculture, reforestation and establishment of a protected area for biodiversity conservation in Addis Alem watershed on approximately 612 ha.
