Sustainable use of biomass for energy purposes

The project aims to capitalize on biomass derived from agricultural waste in the Vlad Tepes village. The project will implement a sustainable solution for heating (briquetting installation) in pilot locations with due consideration to continuity by involving the private sector in the process. The project also lays the grounds for reaching a multiplier effect in the community, by raising awareness and interest in using renewable energies as a way to fight climate change effects, ensuring demand for energy produced out of vegetable biomass, and involving the community itself in making decisions to increase the weight of renewable energy use at local level.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

12 persons are involved in training activities, to become opinion leaders; 160 persons will participate in public debates and survey activities; 1,200 persons are involved in the information activities.

Notable Community Participation

The Community from Vlad Tepes commune, and the local public administration participate and co-finance the project activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the climate change issue and on the role of the use of RES in the mitigation of climate change causes.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The private sector involvement in project activities has beneficial financial effects for the community: 1. during the project implementation secures the project co-financing, the space for installing the equipment and provides for free 10t of briquettes to be used for heating public buildings and households with very low income; 2. after the project end, the private operator will continue to operate the equipment and will provide, for free, the necessary briquettes for heating the kindergarten.

Replication of project activities

The project can be replicated in any locality with agricultural waste material. In the commune of Dorobantu, Calarasi county, there has already been realized a management plan for the aquisition of a similar installation.

Project sustainability

The project continuity is assured through the fact there will be kept a social and a promotional dimension of the product (briquettes), as the administrator of the briquetting machine will supply briquettes to a school from the commune for two years. This gesture will assure the multiplier effect of the advantages of briquette usage, as the students will be the vectors of dissemination of the project. The installation's administrator will introduce the briquettes on the market, which would solve the mid-term costs of the installation.

Policy Influence

The project did not influence governmental policies, but has applied a series of opportunities identified in the National Plan for Biomass.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project?s activity will contribute to the increase in local population income by promoting and piloting the use of renewable energy sources (biomass from agricultural waste) for the residential heating.

Capacity - Building Component

Trainings, public debates and information activities will be developed within the project, contributing to the capacity building of the local communities regarding the use of renewable energy sources, for residential heating.

- Awareness raising and familiarity with measures and renewable energy related technologies - using briquettes made of agricultural waste - 1200 persons form the local community informed
- The use of renewable energy resources has increased - 6 public buildings and 100 household heated with the briquettes
- 200 tonnes of briquettes produced annually
- 10 tonnes of briquettes were distributed free for the heating of public buildings and households
- 16 tonnes of wood has been spared by distributing briquettes for free
- 20 persons trained on technical possibilities of renewable energy resources usage
- 1 briquetting machine installed
- 6 persons trained on operating the briquetting machine, 400 persons trained at AGROMEC SA
- 2 public debates organized on climate change with 100 participants
- 6000 information materials realized, 750 brochures, 300 leaflets distributed, 1 information package realized, 100 questionnaires applied, 100 interviews moderated, 1 press conference organized, apparition in 7 local and national newspapers
