Think pro-environmentally - act now

The project aims to ensure an increased level of public awarness and information on climate change impacts in four villages that are also tourist destinations (Brusturi, Draganesti, Raucesti-Neamt and Boroaia) by implementing measures meant to reduce and store carbon emissions. The project will set up pilot systems using photovoltaic panels for public lighting and undertake systematic planting of adequate species of trees that have a high potential to erase the carbon footprint in the target areas - within a high participatory process of the communities themselves.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

30 persons participate in the focus groups; 100 locals are involved in public debates; 200 persons are involved in the installation of the photovoltaic panels; 400 students and 20 teachers participate in activities related to green spaces plantation; 5,000 locals participate in the Green Caravan activities; 20,000 persons are involved in the information activities.

Gender Focus

500 women will be involved in the Green Caravan activities; 25 women participate in the green spaces maintenance.

Notable Community Participation

Four rural communities from Neamt (3) and Suceava (1) counties, two local NGOs, two schools and four Local Public Administrations participate and co-finance the project activities.

Policy Influence

The Local Council adopted a policy regarding the involvement in the management of green spaces in terms of climate change

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the climate change and on the role of RES use and in the mitigation of climate change causes.

Project sustainability

The photovoltaic panels will function at least 30 years without involving maintenance costs. The planted seedlings will start to produce Oxygen at least 25 years, if they are kept in good conditions, which is assured by the locals involvement. The printed materials can circulate or be reprinted even after the project completion.

Policy Impact

The project aims to document a decision of the Local Councils regarding the increase of the green space surfaces in rural areas, as an instrument to increase the Carbon sequestration capacity.

Replication of project activities

The project assures the model of good practices for replicating activities in other communities.

Capacity - Building Component

The project information activities (Green Caravan information panels) enhance the capacity of the local population to understand the climate change issues and the possibilities to reduce its causes through the reduction of CO2 emissions (by using renewable energy sources) and the increase of Carbon sequestration capacity (by creating and maintaining green spaces).

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project?s activity will contribute to the increase in local population income by decreasing the cost for public lighting through the use of renewable energy sources.

Project Results

- Information panels with instructions on how to use photovoltaic panels realized and installed at the City Halls and schools of Brusturi, Draganesti, Raucesti from Neamt county, and Boroaia Commune from Suceava county - approximately 7000 persons informed/year
- Advocacy and awareness raising among the inhabitants of local communities regarding the retention of greenhouse gases by trees and the beneficial effects of planting seedlings
- 5000 flyers regarding climate change: energy, wastes, transport, agriculture, natural resources
- The organization of "Green Caravan" campaign, an information campaign about climate change and what can simple inhabitants do to ameliorate the effects
- Visibility of the project: 1000 flyers, 6 stickers for lighting systems with photovoltaic cells, 100 T-shirts, monthly press releases, 6 materials appeared in mass-media
- creating a system demonstration on the use of solar power by using 20 systems based on photovoltaic panels Lighting
- 11250 seedlings planted at the public areas of Draganesti, Raucesti, Boroaia and Brusturi communes - approximately 20.000 persons benefited from this activity
