Vanatori Neamt - Ciclolutia

The project aims to raise awareness on climate change issues and ways to mitigate their effects in the local communities. The project promotes the use of bicycles as an easy-to-achieve sustainable transport means, the use of renewable energies and fast-growing forest species, which will not only result in climate change mitigation, but also provide a new perspective about the environment and sustainable livelihoods in the community.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

- The pedestrian and cycling paths will be extended within 2011. - The photovoltaic panels will be promoted through the Local Council of Vanatori Neamt, as they want to purchase similar solar panels to be installed in front of the City Hall. - More bicycles will be purchased - Teaching activities on ways of combating climate change will continue - The competition "Champions on two wheels" will be included in school curricula - Sustainable land management on degraded land will continue in Vanatori Commune, through the coordination of the Local Council of Vanatori Neamt and Agroforest-Vanatori Neamt Association - Expeditions with bicycles for the inventory of biodiversity in the Natural Park Vanatori Neamt will continue in the upcoming years

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

26 locals are involved in the biodiversity inventory, 250 persons participate in the practical activities (bike tracks arrangement, establishment and maintenance of willow and acacia plantations), 4500 persons participate in the information activities.

Notable Community Participation

The community from Vanatori Neamt village, four NGOs, two schools and the Local Council Vanatori are participating and co-financing the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the climate change issue and on the possibilities to reduce the GHG emissions.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, workshops), contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to climate change and the importance of sustainable transport use (non-motorized) and traditional techniques of land management for the reduction of GHG emissions.

Replication of project activities

The project can be replicated in any of Romania's rural areas, especially in tourist frequented or areas with high tourism potential. One of its first expansion could take place in the communes of the "Zimbru Land", respectively Agapia Cracaoani and Baltatesti, whose characteristics are similar to Vanatori Neamt village.

Gender Focus

The project encourages the women participation in all its activities. They are involved in information activities and participate in the biodiversity inventory

Linkages gef projects

The project location is within the Natural Park Vanatori Neamt, protected area established within the large GEF project "The management of Biodiversity Conservation" (1999-2006).

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by: - supporting the use of a cheap, healthy and environment friendly non-motorised transport; - reducing the costs for public lighting by using photovoltaic panels; - developing a scheme of eco-tourism as an income generating activity.

Policy Influence

The project's activities are related to the policy of assurance and expansion of sustainable land management.

Project Results

- 4500 individuals benefited from the SGP project: 250/2000 women participants/beneficiaries, 450/3000 men participants/beneficiaries, number of youth participants/ beneficiaries: 200/600, number of women benefited of capacity building/ trainings: 80/60, number of men benefited of capacity building/ trainings: 112/94, number of youth benefited of capacity building/ trainings: 140/112
- The creation of pedestrian and cycling paths in the center of Vanatori commune (600 meters), a recreational trail for cyclists (400 meters), the placement of bicycle stands (10 pcs).
- There were installed 5 pillars with photovoltaic panels for the illumination of the cycling paths.
- Awareness raising campaigns on climate change, renewable energy sources, sustainable transport: two meetings prior to project writing, two workshops for project launch and closure, two information panels were made to popularize the pillars with photovoltaic panels, three types of leaflets on renewable energies, sustainable transport, 500 pieces each, 50 shirts, there were purchased a total of 24 bicycles and helmets.
- An area of 0.2 ha planted with willow sits
- Forestry works on 3.5 hectares of degraded land, previously planted with acacia
- The local community is involved in conservation projects
- 117 students trained on ways to combat climate change through 5 sessions
- 2 expeditions with bicycles for an inventory of biodiversity in the Natural Park Vanatori Neamt
