Promotion of pastures degradation decrease in a dry steppe zone of Kazakhstan through creation of a specialized farm for forage grass seeds production
Grazing of livestock around villages, uncontrollable increase of livestock population and unsystematic use of pastures have lead to pastures? plants and soil degradation, loss of pasture productivity. In Kazakhstan seasonal pastures can provide pasture forage in average 240-250 days a year. Rest of the period livestock needs to be provided with winter forage, first of all - hay. But arid climate and limited amount of haylands do not allow providing guarantied amount of winter forage in a lot of areas of Kazakhstan, including Akbulack village. Smoothing this problem is possible by creation of sowing haylands. But the creation of sowing haylands restrained with lack of seeds. Practically there is no seed production farms in regions with developed livestock.
The project aim:
Creation of demonstration site for wheat-grass seeds production for expansion of sowing haylands areas on degraded lands of Akmola oblast.
Project tasks:
1) Creation of demonstration site of drought resistant wheat-grass seeds production using optimal agricultural techniques, guaranteeing stable seed crops;
2) Organization of wheat-grass seeds clearing system with conditioned standards;
3) Propagation of knowledge and sharing of gained experience.
Project results:
Creation of wheat-grass seeds production base in Akmola area allowed trying out technology of wheat-grass cultivation on about 100 ha area for getting seeds. As a result of new technology introduction, crop capacity increased from 0,5-0,7 c/ha to 1 centner from hectare. Within the project, about 100 c of seeds got and realized to farmers. Reserve of wheat-grass seeds allow farmers to scale up sowing lands, growing wheat-grass, stocking high-quality hay for needed periods and finally ? decrease pressure on degrading pastures by partial passing on livestock confinement.
