Capacity building and marketing mechanism for nature products by National Nature Farming Network

According to the NCR, the largest percentage of forests belongs to Ratnapura district. This project proposes to minimize the adverse effects caused by surrounding communities with sustainable utilization of nature products. This focuses on developing alternate income generation for the community thus driving them on community based conservation initiatives, being the activities, integrating 25 organizations towards a marketing mechanism, establishing consumer societies, establishing a sales center in Colombo and developing the capacities of organizations on organic products

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

All financial activities will be managed by proposed ?Company of Environmentally Friendly Consumer products Sales? consisting of 25-member organizations, establishing under the National Nature Farming Network (NNFN). The Director Board of the Company should approve expected estimates of monthly expenditures in advance.

Notable Community Participation

All these products are results of environmental conservation activities conducted by village farmer communities. Among those products: traditional varieties of rice, products of jaggery palm, grains, yams, fruits, vegetables, dehydrated jack & bread fruits, coconut fiber products, fishery products, seeds, handicrafts & compost fertilizers. Communities are getting direct benefits by selling all these products. Therefore, they are active participants of implementation of the programs. Village communities are joining to the program through 25 member organizations in this network and they will become as shareholders of the proposed Company of Environmentally Friendly Consumer Products.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Necessary pure bee honey, organic ragi and maize will be purchased from aborigines communities of Pollebedda, Dambana and Hennagala villages. We are already conducting organic home gardening programs in these villages.

Gender Focus

Project activities of the Network will be conducted with the member community organizations of the Network and their village level producers and small groups. Almost every grassroots activities are mainly conducting with women participation. There are awareness raising programs on savings and have been planed mechanisms of providing credit facilities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Purchasing of environmentally friendly products of communities, providing of marketing facilities, income generation activities are results of direct involvement of communities extended through community organizations. These practices are helping successfully, maintain sustainably the program of environmental friendly bio-diversity conservation activities. Income generates by the Company of Consumer Products will be used after a year period of implementation project activities.

Policy Impact

This project is conducting in accordance to the Bio- Diversity Conservation Act of Sri Lanka. This project helps to bio-diversity conservations in Sri Lankan forests.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Whole programs of the projects are designed to organize member village communities and consumer societies by awareness raising activities, through our own Web and publications.
