Makuya Medicinal Plants Development Area and Environment Educational Centre
The project will seek to establish a medicinal plants nursery and educational centre within a pre-existing community managed medicinal plants conservation area in the Makuya Region of Limpopo. The medicinal plants development area will provide a number of local benefits including: Conservation and sustainable use of important indigenous plants, trees and vegetables; Increased health to Makuya community members from the provision of care at the medical centre ; Local access to indigenous vegetables; Additional income to the traditional healers from providing healthcare, selling sustainably harvested medicinal plants and indigenous vegetables; Environmental and cultural education for the 40 local schools; Bio-prospecting opportunities; Bio-cultural tourism provided by community members to school children and tourists keen on understanding more about Venda culture and endemic biodiversity.
