Supporting private nurseries located in buffer zone of protected areas through introducing financial scheme, that encourages growth of saplings of rare, endemic and endangered plant species in Nookat, Karakuldja and Uzgen rayons.

With the increase of needs in firewood in the rural areas of Osh oblast and uncontrolled cutting, the tree and shrubbery vegetation is reduced dramatically, thus triggering a degradation of soil and vegetation as well.
The solution is proposed by the local Jamaat which offers an elaboration of a financial scheme for growing endemic, rare and endangered plant species; increasing public awareness on significance of biodiversity preservation, assistance in sale of saplings, dissemination of gained experience and technology of growing saplings.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Both women and men were involved into proejct activiries (workshops, ecological actions, etc.) equally.

Capacity - Building Component

Consultations of Osh State University (forest specialists, botanist, eco-education) were provided to the grantee during all period of project realization.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Dissemination of gained experience through local TV shows, publishing articles in local newspaper, publishing posters, shooting video films will cover different groups of population.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Families from local population participate in creating financial sheme through growing of saplings of rare, endemic and endangered plant species in nurseries.Financial sheme is introduced to improve their financial well-being.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Great number of publications were issued during the project - colourful poster, memo with contact information of nurseries, broschre with description of methodson how to plant Red listed species of fruit trees, etc.Project publications were developed both in Russian and Kyrgyz language.

Policy Influence

The project ahd good public rosonance due to ecological actions on planting Red-listed species of fruit trees. Wide dessemination of the project publications also helped to promote the concept on creation microreserves and nurseries on growing Red-listed species. Quality of the eco-educationin schools of Osh province was raised.

Project sustainability

The projectis sustainable, as Red-listed species were planted in shool yeards in Osh city and some village schools. Demonstration area was also created on the base of the Osh State uniersity (more then 50 trees).

Notable Community Participation

Youth was actively involved inthis proejct through participation in spring ecological actions on planting endemic and Red-listed trees in school yeards.

there is opportunity of further development ofithe project, as "Shoro" company is intrested inproduction of juces, made of fruit trees, so, this will create marketing base for further growing of the Red-listed species.

Project Results

During implementation of the Project following activities have been done:
1. Financial scheme and also criteria of participating to it have been elaborated.
2. Work with private nurseries:
- Review of existing and functioning private nurseries;
- Expert review and consultancy was carried out about the basics of species in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan for planting (apple-trees, plum-trees, almond-trees, hawthorns, pear-trees).
- Agreements of collaboration have been signed with 5 nurseries: fist part of bonuses are paid,
territories of nurseries are increased by additional fencing. The endemic, rare and endangered
species are planted.
3. Increasing public awareness:
- Booklets with information on Project: 3 types have been elaborated, 500 copies of which are issued
and disseminated to different groups of local population and stakeholders:
- Leaflets are elaborated, 390 copies are issued and disseminated to local population;
- Article "Nurseries are Involved in Conservation of Biodiversity" was prepared and published in local
newspaper "Osh Janyrygy".
4. Proejct publications (poster, memo and broschure) in Russian and Kyrgyz languages were issued.
