Enhancing transparency of fees, collected from visitors to the mazar “Shudugor-Ata” to preserve the ecosystem of spring Shudugor-Ata through regular allocation of funds for environmental activities, implementation, operation, and support of environmentally friendly farming methods

The place of Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" is considered as a sacred place where people used to come to pray for their wishes, . They usually come in a group of people and to slaughter a sheep or a goat. In this regard, the special condition should be established for these traditions and avoid pollution of ecology. The local initiative was raised to protect this place from intensity of anthropological load by planting vegetation alongside of spring , construction of separate place for slaughtering animal and a place where community can wash their dishes with hot water maintained by the solar collector.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

1. There were 668 st of calendars printed for sale with information about Mazar "Shudugor Ata" at a price of 50 soms each (1 USD). 20 soms from each sold calendar will go for securing planted saplings, the rest 30 soms will go to Jamaat's cashbook. 2. It was also set that 50% of all received money of Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" will be given to Jamaat "Nurjibek" for the following purposes: planting saplings, protecting them.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

As the Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" is a sainted place of all Aksy, Ala-Buka and Chatkal regions, the local community of three rayons benefited from this project and were involved into its realization by providing sampling,making financial contribution and paying for the construction works. Especially, school children helped in cleaning the area of sainted place and in greening activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Conducting informational campaign through placing boards, publishing booklets and calendars and shooting video will help in promoting public awareness on environment. Regular meetings with local population will also help to do this.

Policy Impact

For the better use of sainted place with respect to its environment and ecology there was a rule elaborated with the help of lawyer and with participation of local communities during the meeting of the village. The decision was, that population should pay for eco service provided here and it should be invested into the improving and maintaining of infrastructure.

Notable Community Participation

Population of Avletim village decided to take in its own hands handling sanitary and environmental situation of the village and its surroundings. Villagers take active part in planting trees for preserving biodiversity, also they do active social work for promoting environmental friendly housekeeping.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The financial mechanism is that fees, collected from visitors, will be used for creating environmentally friendly infrastructure for visitors.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project foresees inclusion of fees for those coming to Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" in the amount of 50 KGS (1USD) per person, and to use collected money for improving infrastructure of the village and Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" place's surrounding.

Policy Influence

The project had a policy influence in the local level, which have changed the attitude of people to the Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" as well as changed the management of resources.

Project Results

1. A lot of works have been done on updating infrastructure of Mazar "Shudugor-Ata": the territory near the spring "Shudugor-Ata" was improved: the spring was fenced around ; trees planted; mounting shed, banisters and toilet; putting garbage cans and etc. Shed was necessary for the place of slaughtering cattle or sheep (by national tradition).
As a result, the overall sanitary condition and ecosystem of Mazar "Shudugor-Ata" have been improved.
2. Besides this, solar collector was bought. It is using for heating water (to wash up and etc.)
Informational campaign was also conducted: meetings with local population, placing 2 informational boards, issuing 500 booklets & 300 calendars, and shooting video on Project activities. It was explained that it is necessary to stop cutting trees, included to the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan (for example, Semenov's fir). Project photo story has been compiled. All these materials were distributed among members of Jamaat.
3. Jamaat in accordance with Mazar "Shudugor Ata" elaborated rules for use of Mazar and the funds received from Mazar's cash box and selling of calendars. After consultation with lawyer, elaborated rules were submitted to Ayil Okmotu and approved by it, and they were put on a board for visitors to observe the transparency of their activities.
4. 10 thousand saplings have been planted on 2 hectares of nearby Mazar bulak. Students of 10th grade participated in planting saplings on a voluntary basis.
5. Bird nests were installed on nearby trees by students of 9th grade.
6. Action on gathering of garbage on the territory of Mazar had been conducted.
