Creating financial scheme that encourages the use of environmentally friendly technologies to combat land degradation and to prevent agricultural burning in bassin of river Zerger in Uzgen district of Osh oblast

The project are, village of Zerger is located in the mountainous territory that adds difficulties to its even worse economical and ecological situation in the region. There is a dramatic shortage of arable lands, which has escalated in the last years due to the rush banks. The Public Foundation of Mountain Village Development Foundation aims at realization of project which would cope with the weeds by ecologically friendly methods like planting of sainfoins. The project proposes to encourage local population by providing incentives to those who will fight with weed by the method of planting sainfoin.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

In the frame of the first version of project before its modification, there were selected 77 farmers who got the seeds of sainfoin for planting. After the projects modification there were three schools selected and the poplar and other fruit trees were planted there for the sustainability.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

It is expected that as a result of project implementation fertility of p lough lands will raise through sowing sainfoin which doesn't cause any damage to environment. Territory of six villages will be cleaned from reed, and income of local households will raise due to cleaned land development.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Micro-crediting is a financial instrument for providing project sustainability and encouraging local population to give up the field arson method of fighting against weeds but planting of sainfoin.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Promoting public awareness will be maintained through informing local population on ecological safety and through raising local population's potential in a sphere of sainfoin culturing. Dissemination of gained experience and technology were done through printed booklets and manuals, as well as by using the platform of Mountain Partnership a network of NGOs in CA through its e- newsletter

Notable Community Participation

The project involved farmers from 3 villages: Zerger a/o 44 farmers, Jylaldin a/o 12 farmers and from Jazyn a/o 6 farmers participated in the project and had received seeds of sainfoin. Later after modification of project according to the recommendations from external monitoring there were three schools participating in the project who will plant the trees of different fruit tree varieties.

Policy Influence

The project's actions were disseminated during the ecological action with school pupils and local population in the village. The representatives of a/o from the villages Ayu, Kairat and Jany-Ayil participated there and received the informational materials. The article published in newspaper "Ozgon Nuru" and was aired in National TV Channel and Osh oblast TV.

Project sustainability

To ensure tha projects guarantee, the project realizign foundation keeps to monitor the territories of three schools to check the vitality of trees. In the frame of the first version of project before its modification, there were selected 77 farmers who got the seeds of sainfoin for planting. After the projects modification there were three schools selected and the poplar and other fruit trees were planted totally amounted to 17300st. Additionally there will be 108 st of conifer planted in November

Project Results

During implementation of the first version of Project following activities have been done:
1. Financial scheme and criteria of participating in it are elaborated.
2. Created seed fund by bying sainfoin seeds (8000 kg) and organizing guarding them in storage.
3. Applications are accepted, participants are selected , agreements are signed. 77 farmers are
participating to the Project.
4. Agricultural work on fields:
4.1. Plowing, cleaning, planning fields (fuel, rent of equipment, labor and etc.).
4.2. Seeding on the area of 80 ha, mowing, collecting and transporting crop (fuel,
rent of equipment, labor and etc.).
As a result, territories of pilot villages are cleaned from reed, technology is used by local population, imcome of local households are increased because of using these areas, and, ecological situation of the region is improved. Before the Project local population used an inefficient and environmentally demaging method, burning all vegetation in such areas.
5. Information campaign:
5.1. On sustainable using resources of ecosystem by applying different safe and effective
technologies (for example, elaborating technological map of growing sainfoin in local conditions).
5.2. Workshops on different issues have been organized and conducted (for example, on technologies
to combat weeds by growing sainfoin, on joint development of technologies)
5.3. Posters on Project, photos, video film, article in Bulletin of "CAMP Ala-Too"

In the frame of the second version after the modification the project there were achieved following results:
three schools were selected,
the sampling of apples, pear, poplar and other were bought and planted.
All the information campaign conducted and aired in TV programs in a national and local level.
