Reduction of land degradation rate and climate aridity by rehabilitation of tree and bush vegetation containing species included in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan in adyr zone of Kurshab Ayil Okrug Uzgen rayon

The project is addressed to the issue of deforestation in the village of Kurshab, Uzgen Rayon, Osh oblast, where during the Soviet period a large area was planted with trees which later formed a dense forest. But nowadays, after more than 20 years, the forest has only 1/4 parts from the original one because of uncontrolled use of trees as a firewood, as well as breakdown of irrigation system.
Public Foundation of "Uzgen Ecosystema" initiated to rehabilitate the former forest in the area of 50ha through planting the fruit trees which are in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, the irrigation system will also be improved by the project that will ensure the sustainability of project's life.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

An effective cooperation between different sectors and local population lead to the successful implementation of project.

Capacity - Building Component

In the frame of the project there was a meeting with local population including old veterans and representatives of local administration on the importance of rehabilitation of woodland belt for the future of their generations. Additionally one consulting lecture was organized for the members of Jamaat on "Effective use of work results and marketing of products"

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Informational campaign, including installation of 2 boards, publishing and distribution of 500 booklets about the project, 2 articles in local newspaper and informing on Project activities through local TV channel, will increase public awareness on project implemented and disseminate the informations of its results.

Policy Influence

On the Rayon level (administrative district) the project was supported and the contribution was made by the state institutions like Local Nature Protection Fund of Osh Oblast and Ozgon Rayon Management of Water Industry which means their attention was changed to the system of environmental protection.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Sustainable livelihood is foreseen through the planted fruit trees in the ammount of 8000 pieces which are in the list of Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. Local population will have a total ownership to all these trees that will also help them in getting sustainable long term profit.

Planning gef grant

The medium sized project is proposed by the PF "Uzgen Ecosystema" to up scale the project and conduct regular informational campaign of the project aimed at broader dissemination and demonstration of practice.

Notable Community Participation

The project involved a population of different sectors: civil society, governmental institutions and international organizations which lead to achievement of successful results.

Project sustainability

The sustainability of the project is ensured as the local population is interested in the long term benefit from the garden they have rehabilitated. As long as fruit trees will provide with apples, pears and other fruits for the local residents of the village Kurshab they will maintain its sustainability, conducting on time irrigation, fencing to protect from cattle etc.

Project Results

Completed project activities according to project indicators:
1. 8000 saplings of fruit trees, included in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan, have been planted.
2. Mechanized cleaning of the irrigation ditches of 3.8 km length were conducted.
3. 6800 dog-roses and prunes were planted additionally (co-financing from Osh oblast fund of environment protection and Public Foundation "Ozgon-Ecosystema"). So, total amount of saplins is 1542400 instead
of planned 8000.
4. The planted territory was fenced and guarding was organized. During the interim monitoring it was
revealed that the vitality of the planted saplings were 93%, so care of these saplings (watering in
time and etc.) was satisfactory.
5. Drainage system from channels was repaired and installed.
Informational campaign was also conducted:
1. 2 informational boards were installed.
2. Booklets have been developed, issued (500) and disseminated to local population.
3. Two articles with information on Project were published in local newspaper "Ozgon Nuru" (April 19,
2010 and May 18, 2010).
4. Information on Project activities was presented on local TV channel
Necessary equipment (digital camera, USB-modem) and furniture was bought.
On Victory Day, 9th of May, charity meeting was organized and conducted for veterans and elderly people (for expenses of Public Foundation "Ozgon-Ecosystema"). Deputies of Kurshab ayil okrug also participated to the event.The project implementer reported to the population about the results of Project.
