The Rowlandsfield Forest Conservation Project
Rowlandsfield is a mountainous area one that has a section of the Blue and John Crow Mountains forming a section of its expanse. The main problem for the community is that a telecommunication provider has erected a mega tower in the mountains, resulting in negative outcomes of denuding a vast area of the forest floor of trees and jeopardising the water catchment area of the community. The RCDCBS is in the process of implementing a rehabilitation of the water supply. The shaded area that should protect the entombment of the water has been removed and this is to the detriment of the water supply, as there is now a rapid evaporation of the water. The ecosystem is threatened as the wildlife will be lessened if the trees are recklessly cut down. Farmers have farmed their crops on the borders of the mountain, however the community group has now seen it fit to monitor what is being done more closely. The Forestry Department has now been requested to intervene with capacity building regarding forestry management. Reforestation will take place on Crown Land, Parish Council Land (they have given permission to the RCDCBS to construct the water tank on location). The nearby private properties of farmers would also benefit, as the actions on these lands also affect the ecosystem. Ten to Fifteen acres are to be replanted over time.
