Demonstration of models for desert ecosystems rehabilitation on degraded lands of Surkhandarya province
The project aimed at transferring knowledge and skills to local people on minimizing threats to a desert ecosystem and attempting to rehabilitate it through a set on instruments and approaches on model plots in Surkhandarya province.
The arid ecosystems are especially fragile and can be easily affected by human activities. Desert areas in Surhandarya province in Uzbekistan has become severely degraded sand dunes after all existing plan communities were destroyed. Local people cut down all the trees and even dig out roots of the plants for fuel. Whereas 40 years ago these areas were covered by healthy desert forests, consisting of saxoul trees, shrub communities and various grass plants, now these areas are totally bare.
The project aims to teach local communities how to rehabilitate desert ecosystem receiving enough wood fuel without damaging the natural desert ecosystem and decreasing the need for fuel introducing energy efficient technologies.

Gender Focus
Responsibilities of men and women will be equally divided. It can not be said unambiguously that status of women can be improved or worsened. In the present status quo in some of the households men are buying wood fuel from people who are engaged in harvesting wood fuel in the desert. In others, women are responsible for collecting this wood fuel in the desert.
