Creation of conditions for forward development of cattle breeding in the grain sowing region of Kazakhstan
Territory for Valikhan rural district most of lands are in use for grain production. In last decades land degrades due to monoculture and areas for grain production decreases. Wastelands get infested with species unsutable for foraging and become nursery for locusts. Local people to improve their income develop livestock farming and increase total number of livestock. But there is lack of pastures and forage, so existing pastures suffer from overgrazing and degrade. The project intends to solve this problem through involving wastelands into creation of sowing pastures and introduction of their rational use by local farmers.

Project aim:
Demonstrate the possibility of restoration of degraded lands via sowing of crested-wheat grass to provide meat livestock farming with pasture forage that will help to improve Valikhanov community members? livelihood.

Project tasks:
- Restoration of degraded lands through sowing of crested-wheat grass
- Providing of livestock with sterling and cheap pasture forage at the cost of introduction of scheme of pasture rotation
- Creation of information and learning base for teaching the technologies of expanding meet livestock forage base in grain area of Kazakhstan where pasture lands are limited
- Advocacy, information dissemination, and introduction of degraded lands restoration experience for creation of highly productive pastures and development of meat farming in grain area

Project results:
- In agriculture rotation included 150 ha of degraded and fallow lands and sowing pastures created
- Liveweight of livestock increased up to 20%
- Due to additional liveweight gain and increased quality of livestock products increased level of well-being of the local community members
- Decreased social tension among local population about grazing lands by providing locals with additional sowing grazing lands and quantum satis of feed
- Demonstrated project experience on sustainable, profitable development of livestock farming in regional farms, which have the possibility to improve forage base by including in pasture rotation degraded and fallow lands
- Farms, leading by women, involved into project activities

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
At least 24 women took part in project realisation. Special seminar on organising sowing lands for womens was hold with participation of experts and women from project area and neighbouring areas.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Experts were giving enlightening talks to local villagers on the work done and ways of forage base creation for farming purposes, restoration of degrading lands and ways of live weight gain of livestock. Thematic seminars on positive aspects of project realizing were hold and different materials on right ways of pasture management and special project parts were issuing in mass media. Film on project activities was made.
