Sun and wind at farmers’ service
Sun and wind at farmers’ service
The need for energy sources is an urgent issue for all farmers and bee farms. Climatic conditions of the Almaty region allow their solar and wind sources of electricity and solar water heaters. Relevance of the proposed project is determined not only the needs of farmers and beekeepers in renewable energy and heat, but the prospect of their introduction, since our region has a large number of farms and households. If there are some minuses, and solar and wind power plants have a huge advantage - the lack of cash expenses for their maintenance and fuel supply, and environmental cleanliness. Problem in the provision of renewable energy sources is also a fact that many farmers and beekeepers do not have sufficient knowledge and information about alternative energy sources and possibilities of their use, so enjoy morally outdated, environmentally harmful, bulky and inconvenient to use petrol and diesel generators of electricity.

Project aim:
Demonstration of progressive experience in renewable energy use on the example of farming and bee-keeping societies of the Almaty area.

Project tasks:
- Install in two farms (beekeeping) of the Almaty region on solar minielectrical power stations in each sector capacity 1,5 - 2 kW and a wind power station 1,5 - 2 kW for a comprehensive independent of power supply, and installation of five solar water heaters to provide hot water bee farm;
- Provision of 30 farms and individual entrepreneurs by mobile electricity stations capacity from 5 to 20 watts for their distant pastures, bee-keeping, field mills, nomadic groups and mobile teams;
- Conducting a broad campaign to promote renewable energy, training of farmers and other community groups on the basics of alternative energy and the practice of its use based on the equipped farms.

Project results:
- Achieved environmental effect which got from renunciation of using petrolic and diesel generators. Project achieved decreasing CO2 emissions in amount of 170t annually
- Total number of introduced innovations: 2 complexes of power supply (2 kilowatt capacity mini power plants) based on sun energy usage, 1 complex of power supply (2 kilowatt capacity mini power plant) based on wind energy usage, 2 complexes of hot water supply based on sun energy usage, 50 mobile sets of power supply with 20-30 watt capacity based on sun energy usage, 50 portable lamps based on sun energy usage
- Provided energy services to the public in amount of $ 48,640 (U.S. dollars), as well as informative, educational, promotional, cultural and educational services in amount of $ 12,916 (U.S. dollars)

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Improving life sustenance of local community members achieved by providing autonomous power supply from wind power mini plant, solar stations and portable solar lamps. This led to costs on fuel decreasing, de-creased dependence of centralized power supply and water heating.
Gender Focus
In project realizing not less than 60% of activities are realized by women (about 25 female persons). They imple-ment administrative, marketing, PR and organizing works, all toil realized by men. Not less than 150 women will benefit from the project realizing.
