Modern Agriculture Technologies - Hydroponics

The promotion of a hydroponics initiative amongst women in Salto Abaixo, Santa Cruz, Santiago Island, as livelihood option, and climate change adaption project, is a response from women head of household, previously engaged in illegal sand extraction. The project intents to support 10 women, with a double fold objective: To adapt to climate change by using ways to control and sustainable use of water, while increasing livelihood options for women.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

10 women beneficiaries were trained in hydroponics production and maintenance techniques, as well as management for small business initiatives

Notable Community Participation

Although the hydroponics initiative benefited directly only 10 women and their immediate families, there was a broad involvement of all CBO members. A total of 51l, 40 women and 11 men.

Project sustainability

The implemented system is self sustainable. The beneficiaries were trained in hydroponics production and maintenance. Their capacities were also strengthened in small business management. Increased production and sale of vegetables will ensure extra income for beneficiaries and their families.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The initiative promotes awareness about women engagement in environmental causes (sustainable water management) and eradication of poverty in rural areas

Gender Focus

The project was proposed, implemented and managed by 10 women household heads

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The structure build and the capacities provided are long term investments onto the lives of the beneficiary families. It will entail that all single women beneficiary will have more time to dedicate to their families, and their income increased ($ 1,080 USD per year per woman approximately) due an increase and availability of products from their hydroponics compound.

This project will impact directly on the following environmental policies and priorities: National Action Plan for the Environment (PANA II), National Climate Change Adaptation Program (NAPA), National Action Plan Agriculture Development (PADA), and National Program of Fight Against Poverty
