Abandoning water pollution through elimination of unregulated garbage storehouse and recultivation of the area, village of Bratya Daskalovi, Municipality of Bratya Daskalovi, Stara Zagora District
Justification
Due to its location and hydrogeological characteristics the unregulated garbage storehouse at the village of Bratya Daskalovi is a major source of diffuse contamination of the Maritsa River basin, i.e. contaminator having transboundary impact. Thus Municipality Administration has supported the current project both financially and non-financially towards solving the problem with contamination of the surface waters, groundwater, as well as soil and atmosphere air.

Goal and expected impacts
Current project proposal aims at stoppage of water contamination through elimination and recultivation of unregulated garbage storehouse area. As a result long term pollution of Maritsa River Basin waters will be discontinued. The recultivation is expected to stop the land degradation process and diminish the existing risks for human health.
Objectives and expected results
Main objective is to eliminate unregulated garbage storehouse and thus water pollution, and additionally to raise public awareness towards the problem with unregulated garbage discharge and its effects on human health and environment.
Main expected result is stoppage of surface water and groundwater pollution, soil and atmosphere air. Second main result is direct positive impact at the quality of life of the local population.
Major activities
Major activities are as follows:
- Separate collection and transport of the garbage to the regional storehouse at town of Chirpan;
- Preparing the area for biological recultivation;
- Developing program for planting with local tree and shrub species;
- Meetings with representatives of local population and authorities;
- Developing proposals towards alteration in local planning documents;
- Preparation of Municipality program for deserted lands;
- Organizing final seminar.
Sustainability
Financial sustainability is guaranteed by the partnership of the Municipality of Bratya Daskalovi, ensuring financial contribution to the project activities and long term supporting of created green area and preservation by integration into the municipality development plans. Additional sustainability will be ensured by activities for popularization and full public involvement.

Total budget: 50 000 BGN (100%);
from GEF SGP: 25 000 BGN (50 %);
financial contribution to the project from Municipality of Bratya Daskalovi: 20 000 BGN (40%);
in-kind contribution to the project from Municipality of Bratya Daskalovi: 5 000 BGN (10%).
