Increase of adaptive and mitigation potential of local population to changes of climate and awareness on importance of preservation of biodiversity by means of training and carrying out of propaganda actions among employees of the local organizations of public health of seven regions of Kyrgyzstan

The main idea of the project is to raise awareness of population, local health institutions, representatives of Mass Media and others about the climate change, biodiverstiy conservation and health of population. To reach the main goal of the project the actions were developed and implemented by the Biom ecological movement as follows:
Conducted joint informational training campaign about the issues regarding climate change, preservation of biodiversity and population health.
Carryied out educational and propaganda actions among employees of 140 regional committees of health, 980 medico-obstetrical points and 150 representatives of 52 local centers of the sanitary and epidemiological control posts.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness on environmental problems among employees of 140 regional committees of health, 980 medico-obstetrical points and 150 representatives of 52 local centers of the sanitary and epidemiological servicel was increased. For reaching an effective results quality desinged posters, video informational materials, leaflets and manuals were developed, printed in Russian and Kyrgyz and disseminated to the beneficiaries. Moreover, there were 2 TV programs broadcasted in the National Channel which covers all the regions of Kyrgyzstan. The information campaing and awareness were also accompanied by regular appearance of press-releases as well as by press conferences of the BIOM representatives and partner organizations.

Project sustainability

Capacity building trainings for health officers and for media was aimed at ensuring the long term sustainablity and use of project outcomes. Additionally, rich-contained manuals in Kyrgyz and Russian languages will increase the effect of project and support to its further dissemination.

Policy Influence

On of the main focuses of the project were directed to Managerial staff of the health institutions. Their participation in the project is crucial, as they can have a key role in the desing the policies regarding climate change. Hence, they were provided with important informations on the impacts of CC to the health of people, to the system of organism etc.,

Policy Impact

One of the main target group of the project was policy makers- key persons included Ministry of Health and its sub devisions- Health Promoting centres who took an active part in the implementation of the project.

Capacity - Building Component

Organizing and conductung 4 workshops on influence of climate changing for specialists of State Sanitary and Epidomological Inspection for informing about environment, biodiversity and climate conservation will stimulate them to enhance their activities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The activities comprised by enhancing capacity of Media, health workers and the policy makers to better understand the process of climate change and the influences which it can have to every living nature, public health, environment etc.were carried out which are the critical component for the sustainable livelihood.

Notable Community Participation

The project involved the population of different levels incuding grass roots who are the most vulnurable to any environmental changes, up to policy makers who in their tern can have a great influance for the actions to be taken on different levels for the adaptation to the CC.

Project Results

During implentation of the Project the following activities have been done;
1. Informational campaign:
1.1. Developed, issued and distributed information materials: poster (in Russian & Kyrgyz) and
movie "A Stable Climate - a Healthy Nation!";
1.2. Issued environmental video library "Climate Change and Health", it was delivered to Regional
Health Offices;
1.3. Developed and broadcasted commercial on television.

2. Elaborated, issued and distributed Manuals (30 pieces) on conductung educational activities on
climate and health for specialists of offices on health promotion of Family Medicine Centers.
3. Organized and conducted 2-day workshop (ToT) on conducting educational activities on issues of
health, climate and environment for formed groups of trainers (20 persons) from Regional Health
Committees.
4. The competition for planting area with rare and endangered species and best practices of resource use among midwifery centers, centers of State and Epidemiological Inspection, rayon (district) hospitals, and Family Medicine Centers.
