Rehabilitation of lands' natural fertility by establishing a revoving fund of sainfoin seeds at 75 hectares of pasture and hayland of Josholu aiyl okrug, Alay region.

In the territory of Jasholin ayil okrug (Village administration) there are 75 ha of dry land with a fruitful and chestnut soil. Since the collapse of USSR these lands have not been cultivated being mainly used for pasture and hay purposes. The vegetation cover of these lands nowadays consists of only weed which damages the soil and decrease the productivity.
The project idea is to support the initiative of local inhabitants to plant sainfoin, which strengthens the upper layer of soil from erosion, enriches the soil with nitrogolien, increases productivity and enhances the ability of grass to absorb CO2.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Explanatory and informational campaign on terms of receiving resources from the fund and their returning is aimed on improving dwellers' skills in marketing.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Information campaign, including 1 TV reportage, publishing 3 articles in local newspaper, installation of 2 informational boards, and 7 project signs, publishing 450 booklets, 600 leaflets, will promote further public awareness on global environment.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Local population participate in planting and harvesting sainfoin, as a result, they will have an additional income.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Planting sainfoin strengthens the upper layer soil from erosion, enriches the soil with nitrogen, increases productivity and enhances the ability of grass to absorb CO2 and as a result, ecological situation of this area will improve.

Project sustainability

Rehabilitation of degradated and dry lands by plantation of sainfoins will improve the soil productivity as well as better photosynthetic system. THis will provide a favorable environment for sustainable land use and management. Establishing a seed fund will allow local population to have additional benefit and will cpntribute to their better livelihood.

Replication of project activities

The actual project is proposed to replicate in the neighboring villages of the same distric, and in this regard the members of Jamaat are ready to share with their experiences and skills gained during this project. Moreover,according to the leader of Jamaat Mr.Abdimajit, the project can cover these villages after some years, by providing the same services as to the Jamaat memebrs: giving seeds on a revolving bases.

Policy Influence

The local administration was very interested in this initiative and cooperated in the realization of project. On the local level, population obtained the core meaning of success which is working together.

Capacity - Building Component

Using the scheme of receiving fund resources and then returning will give knowledge on additional opportunities in market conditions.

Project Results

During implementation of the Project the following activities have been done:
- Experts (lawer and agronomist) were invited for giving consultations on composing Agreements, choosing and testing of seeds of sainfoin and barley.
- Agreement with local administration of Josholy ayil okrug (village administration) was achieved for supporting the Project.
- Market review for buying seeds with comparing prices and results of examinations of seeds (provided by farms, private associations and local administrations) has been done.
- Works on buying, transportation and storing seeds of sainfoin and barley.
- Informational campaign on conditions of receiving resources from fund and their returning was organized and conducted: meeting legal expert and Project personnel with private land owners; an article was published in local newspaper "Osh Jarygy".
- Requirements for participation to the competition on cooperation with the Project are determined and competition itself has been organized.
- Agreements on Cooperation have been elaborated and signed between Jamaat "Jashyl-Jer" and 7 (seven) private land owners (on full cycle of works starting from plowing till returning seeds of sainfoin and barley). These owners were choosen from 17 applicants.
- First part of seeds (1863 kg of sainfoin and 1506 kg of barley) are delivered and distributed to farms: there were planted on the area of 15 ha of private land of 7 owners.
- Official documents on co-financing have been obtained.
