Reduction of land degradation rate in the area of 4 hectares by introduction of finance scheme encouraging planting of bush and tree vegetation containing species included in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan in Shekaftar village of Chatkal rayon.

The village of Shakaftar is located in the mountainous area of Southern Kyrgyzstan with population of 6000 people. The population is mainly engaged in agricultural sector. Due to nonrational use of lands there is great problem of degradation that local people face nowadays. Current worsing tendency of living conditions leads to the unfriendly relashionship of man with nature. As a result, there are more trees being cut, increase of mud flow and degradated lands. The possible solution to these problems was initiated by the local community based organization of Nurmuhhamed- to take the responsibility for the lands. The main project idea is to demonstrate economical and ecological attractiveness of rehabilitation of bush and tree vegetation in the degradating areas.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Although there is no specially desinged trainings for the capacity building, but, there is an 'in field' knowledge that villagers will get from the project territory from the project implementaros, through co-working, dissemination of information and sharing ideas.

Policy Influence

At the local level, this initiative have a great implication and will drive to the better condition regarding to ecological and economical benefits. The participation of village population into this project will support change of broader public policy and their treatment to the environment.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Elaboration and introduction of incentive financial resources in the finance sheme encourage growing of saplings and taking care of them.

Notable Community Participation

Families of PF "Nurmuhamed" member's are planting and taking care of tree and bush shelterbelts in the area of 4 hectars. There are also local organization of Mustor-a parnter of project and co-funder, other villagers are also invoved in different protection activites like: transportation of seed, support for water delivering etc.,

Project sustainability

For the sustainability there were carried out an information campaign including: booklets with project information, article in the local newspaper aimed at raising the awareness of population. Additionally, involvement of all the stakeholders into the project and the successful realization of financial scheme that was desinged during the project will ensure the long term of sustainability.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

In the frame of the project, 10 members of Jamaat will get soinfoins and barley from the first year yeald on the bases of repayment, which will ensure social justice for getting equal benefit among the villagers. Implementation of finance scheme gives to the participants an opportunity to increase their welfare.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Informational campaign of the project (billboards, Mass Media coverage, booklets, calendars) and shooting a film about the project - have an aim to popularize environment protection.

Gender Focus

The final outcome of the project will be a protected area from degradation which is a source of live of the local households. In this regard, the project give benefits to both men and women equally.

Project Results

The project is reaching its objectives by reducing the degradated areas through the plantation of rare species of vegetation and trees. Also, the information is reached to the target beneficiaries through the desinged booklets and calendars dissemintaed during the project.
During Project implementation the following activities are done:
- Seeds of sainfoin and barley are bought for plantation.
- Two informational board are installed.
- 300 booklets, 340 calendars are issued and given to local population.
- Necessary equipment is bought: PC, printer, and digital camera.
At the final stage the project was redesigned by the NSC due to lack of capactiy of the NGO. Financial scheme was replaced by conduction of a training workshop on drip irrigation. About 50 people were trained and 2 demonstrational drip irrigation systems were installed in Jalal-Abad Institute and NGO.
Also 1400 saplings of elm, 500 saplings of acacia, 10 saplings chestnut. Project site was fenced by NGO.
