Planning grant: Development of project proposal to increase capacity of local population in preserving biodiversity of buffer zone of newly created Sarkent Park in Leylek rayon of Batken oblast

The main idea of Project: To develop a full project proposal based on the results of the research to be carried out. The project will be elaborated by initiative group of local community together with Directorate of Sarkent Natural Park, local authorities and other stakeholders aimed at sustainable use of resources of the "Sarkent" park territory.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Influence

As a result of implemented research, PF Bilek proposes to elaborate an integrated plan of activities in cooperation with Health Agencies and The Agency of Environment Protection and Forestry about foundation of Centre of Climatotherapy and Herbs Collection and Procurement Point.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Elaboration of Ecotourism Development Plan and its implementation will create more possibilities of sustainable Livelihood: employment opportunities and income diversification for the local community.

Project sustainability

Long term sustainabillity od project will be guranteed through foundation of local jamaat Sumbula, which will work further on capacity building of local population about the biodiversity conservation and development of ecotourism in the buffer sone of natural park 'Sarkent' which was recently founded.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Study report with a total volume of 30 pages in Russian and Kyrgyz will help to learn about real environmental situation in the area.

Notable Community Participation

The administration of natural park "Sarkent" and local population participated in the study of biodiversity of the area, and they shared about the ideas of solving problems of conservation.

Project Results

During Project implementation the following activities have been done:
- Local organization jamaat 'Sumbula' was created consisted of local population;
- Members of jamaat "Sumbula" repaired the road and bridge on the way to the Natural Park "Sarkent" (they were destroyed by strong mud flood in spring 2010).
- Seeds of almond-tree, apple-tree, juniper, and dogrose were planted in nursery on the territory of Park.
- Research on defining zones in State Natural Park "Sarkent". It was proposed to divide the territory of Park "Sarkent" into 3 zones: reserved zone, recreation zone, and reproductive zone.
- Report on current situation with tourism in the area, possibilities of it's development, proposal for improving tourism and creating tourist route within the territory of park "Sarkent" (8 days, about 100 km).
- The map of functional zones and tourist routes of the Park was composed.
- The article on Project activities was published in local newspaper "Ata Jurt" (December 12, 2010).
