Demonstration of additional sustainable methods of livelihood by reducing land degradation in cattle-breeding zone of Kara-Koyun hole of Bakai-Ata rayon, Talas oblast by plantation of tree and bush vegetation

The project idea is to support and propaganda of farmer's initiative, who is planting tree and bush vegetation on the area of 4 hectares with the aim of diversification of using this area's resources and avoiding losses of natural productivity. The project will contribute to combating of land degredation.

Notable Community Participation

Jamaat "Aidake-Ata" members and local population are involved in realization of the project.

Policy Influence

On a minucipal level, the community from the village are interested in the project, they also helped especially in the difficulties like: to clean the roads to the protected zone after mud flow or when there were rivers overflow.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Planting and taking care of saplings of poplar(4000), willow(1000), Tian-Shan fir(100), and elm (4000) will help to reduce land degradation in cattle-breeding zone of Karakoyun hole.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The objective of raising the awareness of population was reached through the establishment of 2 information boards about the project details. Additionally, 2 articles were published in local newspaper: "Talas Turmushu" dated in January 19, 2011; Photo of Chairperson of Jamaat "Aidake-Ata" Bakei Beishekeev was published among the best and famous persons of 2010.

Gender Focus

The project invilved the equal participation of women and men into its implementation.

Capacity - Building Component

The realization of project helped the beneficiaries to get more skills, information and knowledge about the degradation of lands and the ways of combating against it.

Replication of project activities

The replication is planned by the other villagers of the region, people keep coming and asking for the consultancy.

Project sustainability

The sustainability of the project is ensured though the planted fruit trees which will enable the project beneficiaries to get additional income to their households, that will help them to maintain the protected land for a long period.

Project Results

During Project the following activities have been done:
- 4 hectars of area in Karakoyun hole are fenced.
- Saplings of poplar(4000), willow(1000), Tian-Shan fir(100), and elm (4000) are planted and further care is ongoing; it will help to reduce land degradation in cattle-breeding zone of Karakoyun hole.
- Installed 2 informational boards with the following information on Project: the name of Project, the place of implementation, the name of Project Manager, implementing organization and period of Project realization along with logos of GEF, SGP/GEF and UNDP.
Articles in local newspapers have been published. In local "Talas Turmushu" newspaper (January 19, 2011), the photo of Chairperson of Jamaat "Aidake-Ata" Bakei Beishekeev was published among the best and famous persons of 2010.
