Environmental
? Uncontrolled grazing reduced through the capture of 53 stray and roaming donkeys. The donkeys were subsequently placed under the care of the grantee.

Social
? Partnerships built with the local Ministry of Agriculture who have provided the project with the ongoing use of mobile catch pens used to catch stray and roaming donkeys. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Grantee also co-hosted a National Consultation on Donkeys in preparation of a National Policy and Management plan for Donkeys.

GENDER
Participation / Decision making
? Both women and men are represented at the project management and decision level.
? Men participated in the rounding up of stray donkeys and mainly with the physical labour required to move donkeys from the capture pens into the livestock trailer.
? Women assisted with worming the donkeys and the maintenance of the donkey. One woman assisted with the capture of the donkeys and was responsible for the capture of ten donkeys in one village.

Challenges
? Thus far the project has not encountered any challenges specific to men or women.

PROJECT CHALLENGES
? The current method used to capture stray and roaming donkeys requires someone to close the pen?s gate when the donkeys enter the pen for food and water. Those this has worked well in the village, were community members have volunteered to undertake this task, isolated areas prove challenging. The challenge is still under discussion but the grantee has considered hiring a part-time employee to check the pen(s) in the evening and early morning which is when the donkeys usually appear.

LESSONS LEARNED
? In planning always include a team of at least 3-5 members to maintain momentum when individual members are unable to sustain participation.
? Be cognizant that even though the desire to participate is strong because of the value of the project and its activities, some persons and /or organizations may not have the capacity for long-term commitment of the time and effort necessary for sustainability of labour-intensive projects.
? Complex or multi layered management structures for GEF SGP projects increases the time it takes to make decisions. They can also cause a loss of interest among those involved and may actually be disempowering.
? In developing group education or training strategies where there are varying abilities in participants, be prepared with alternate plans to support and accommodate all learning styles and abilities.
? A shade house is a good mechanism to protect seedlings and crops from the elements.
? Plan with the future in mind by developing strategic partnerships.
