I. First progress report (April 8, 2011):
Activities undertaken:
1. Capacity building through participatory analysis of community data and study tours
2. Installing a solar water pumping facility

Results of activities:
1. Increased capacity of members from 73 families witnessed by active participation & sharing thoughts and ideas and realizing strong and weak points of communities (i.e. outstanding unity against scarcity of water sources due to high terrain)
2. Confirmed location for installation of solar pumping unit
3. Completion of water well excavation and solar pump system installation
4. Received in cash co-financing from Wangsai Tambol Municipality (WTMUN)
? THB: 517,000 for launching survey to confirm location of pumping unit and well excavation

Project Communication:
During this period, the project was made more visible by
1. Village communication facility ( central loud speaker system )
2. Community radio
3. Visit from various organizations/groups from within Thailand and outside, including members from the UN staff association in Bangkok and communities from Nakornnayok and Chainart Province .

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
The project had witnessed community unity through their participation in installing the solar water pumping and water supply line. Men and women contributed their times and resources according to their capacity. There were, however, technical problems on selecting pumping locations as the water table in the area was comparatively low and on excavation of well as the terrain was rocky- making the work rather difficult. This problem was addressed by asking cooperation from communities whose plot and terrain would have less geological limitation. In all these mission, the project received technical support from the Department of Underground Resources Region 5, Nakhornratchasima.

Project Expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 130,047 out of the first disbursement of THB: 130,074.15.

II. Monitoring Visit by NC (July 30, 2011):
Findings & Observation:
Baan (village) Phuthai Phatthana in Nakhronratchasima Province?s Parkchong District, the project location, is an agricultural communities in the vicinity of Khao Yai National Park. Majority of targeted population (78 households) earned their living by husbandry and growing crops such as corn, tapioca and other seasonal crops. The village is connected to nation grid with other types of commercial energy such as canned gas and gasoline readily available.

The first witnessed completed activity was the installation of solar water pumping system that supplied water for daily consumption, and agricultural practice, i.e. husbandry( milk cow raising) and crop plantation. The system was intended to supplement the existing system that used grid electricity for pumping, making a solar-grid hybrid system: whenever there was no sunlight, the grid electricity was used for pumping: without sunlight, grid energy was used. So far, the new system satisfactorily supplied water to 35 households, tremendously reducing the use of grid electricity. Before coupling in the solar pumping system, the village paid about THB:3,000/month for electricity ( about 1,200 unit of electricity), now the figure was reduced to about THB: 300 - confirmed for the last four months, - triply better than the originally proposed figure of THB:900. This would be translated into 90 % reduction/avoidance of CO2 from using grid electricity. (One unit of electricity generated in Thailand produces about 580 grammes of CO2). Maintaining the same rate of water use fee at THB: 5 / cu.M, the margin was being added up to the village fund which would be used for system operation and maintenance and other community welfare as specified in the village regulations. Project leaders appeared very satisfied with this mode of community saving.

The second involved a just completed biogas facility. Of 2-cu.M the facility was designed to supply cooking gas to two households-intended to reduce dependence upon canned gas and some grid electricity. The system was of fixed dome type with three cows supplying manure to the pit.

Increased capacity of project leaders and some members were fairly outstanding. The project was appointed by the province to be the learning place for promotion of renewable energy and the self-sufficiency philosophy. So far, project leaders had collaborated with four other Tambols in Parkchong District, and provided training on biogas facility and solar energy for water pumping installation. According to the document perused, several groups from near and far away provinces paid visits to learn from the project.

To proceed with the remaining activities and further promote the adoption of renewable energy,
the project planned to extend water supply system to cover all 78 households and small gardening plots, as well as build more biogas facilities. According to some project leaders, if water use pattern was well planned, the use of electricity from grid for water work would be minimized, and so the emission of CO2.

III. Second progress report (27 September 2011 ):
Activities undertaken:
1. Keeping on capacity building through participatory analysis of community data
2. Putting the installed solar water pumping system into use
3. Conducting participatory evaluation
4. Disseminating project results to wider audiences

Results of activities:
1. Increased capacity and awareness of targeted population witnessed by active participation in project activities , ability to maintain renewable energy system (biogas and solar pumping system), and being resources persons for surrounding communities
2. About 300-ha cultivated land being irrigated and 54 families supplied with water from solar pumping system
3. Reduction of grid electricity consumption for community water pumping from an average of 500 kw-hr/month to 171 kw-hr for the period of 3 months which could be translated to 190 kg /month of CO2 avoidance

Project Communication:
During this period, the project was made more visible as follows:
1.The project was made a renewable energy learning centre of Parkchong District and of Nakhornratchasima Province. Besides, the project was made more visible through community radio and website of the Baan (village Phuthai Phathana)
2. During the period, the project was visited by groups of community leaders from Suphanburi and Buriram Province.

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
With 1,300- Watt capacity of solar panel to drive the pump, it was evident that the amount of pumped water was plentiful , especially during day time. This amount was more that the current 8 cu,M capacity of storage. In order to optimize the system, project committee planned to procure another 8-cu.M storage tank. If things went as planned, the use of solar energy would be maximize, and of grid electricity minimized.

The project report the accumulated expense of THB: 445,470 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB:256,202.89.
