Introduction of alternative energy sources (solar generators) on the pilot specially-protected areas for usage of inexhaustible energy source
Kazakhstan?s SPAs have big territories and have to keep personnel and its logistics, providing well conditions for their being. It is hard to do without electricity. Using traditional electricity sources as fuel or joining transmission facilities don?t meet requirements of sustainable development, especially on nature protection areas. Introduction of alternative energy sources (solar generators) on the pilot specially-protected areas for usage of inexhaustible energy source is effective measure to sustain development of specially-protected areas.

Project aim:
The project aims at sustainability of biodiversity conservation through establishment of alternative sources of energy on 3 pilot areas (State Nature Reserve in Korgalzhyn, Ustyurt and Akzhayik)

Project tasks:
- Installation of solar mini-power plants,
- Development and conduction of training modules and instructions for the SPA staff and local communities on usage of the solar equipment
- Implementation of PR-campaign to promote renewable energy and disseminate the results of the project among the local population, regional and local government departments

Project results:
- The use of alternative energy let to reduce emissions of 3.75 tons of CO2 per year
- Introduced 5 innovations or new technologies
- The total value of energy services provided under the project amounted to 35 thousand dollars
- Significantly improved rating of performance of main activities (environmental, scientific and tourist) in Ustyurt, Korgalzhyn, Barsakelmes State Nature Reserves, and in National Nature Reserve Akzhayik
- Successful experience of using alternative sources of energy distributed to other protected Especially Protected Territories, throw the authority of National Parks, as a measure to mitigate impact on climate change and biodiversity conservation
- NP staff, local residents, NGOs and farmers participated in trainings and seminar, and get acquainted with the principles of solar batteries

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Employees of Barsakelmess, Korgalzhyn and Ustyurt reserves and Akzhayik reserve, represented by SPAs? inspectors and research staff, are one of the most important groups of local communities, participating in project activities by helping in equipment tests, operating and care, and later ? training all interested in operating persons.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Employees of SPAs live in sometimes extreme conditions ? wild nature and unpredictable weather causes many problems for their living, work and researching. Project allows getting preconditions for normal life, work and research in reserves conditions. As a result of equipment installation, number of households, receiving benefits from the project, will be at least three households (three inspectorates? families, living in three cordons on a regular basis). Number of individuals got benefits from the project - 14 inspectors and other employees of four SPAs.
