Retrofitting in the Prespa National Park of 4 ponds used for drinking water by the local shepherds
Retrofitting in the Prespa National Park of 4 ponds used for drinking water by the local shepherds
One of the recommendations of the management plan for the Big Prespa Lake is the distancing and restriction of numbers grazing animals form the lake shores due to their impact on the fragile and important habitats in this area as well as their potential for contributing into the nitrate and phosphorus input into the lake. Currently, one of the main reasons for keeping animals in this area is the availability of drinking water from the lake.
In order to realize this objective it is necessary to provide the necessary infrastructure, mainly watering ponds (lera) in the alternative grazing grounds. This project will retrofit 4 ponds with a concrete grid that is necessary for holding in place the stones placed in the topmost layer. Stones function as a protection for the plastic layer from the piercing from the hooves of the cows.
