REDUCING CARBON EMISIONS THROUGH THE USE OF SOLAR ENERGY IN PROTECTED AGRICULTURE
The problem existing in Mafoota area is the emission of pollutants in the atmosphere as a result of the usage of gasoline and diesel pumps to operate the irrigation systems. This project will introduce the use of solar energy to drive these systems for the recently constructed greenhouses. This is expected to avoid some 6 tons of Co2 emission. The project will be implemented under Climate Change Mitigation ? OP 6.
? Objective
The objective of the project is to introduce a technology that of solar energy that can be used to drive the irrigation and fertigation systems of the recently constructed greenhouses that is environmentally friendly and acceptable, to reduce climate change and global warming.
Mafoota wants to develop their farming community by initiating projects that are environmentally friendly, sustainable and will increase production and other farming communities both in St James and nationally can replicate. The cooperative wants to build a model farming group in keeping with the mandate of the mandate of the government to improve livelihood and the standard of living of local communities. The cooperative intends to be that driving force to bring the change in the use of renewable energy.
? Expected outcomes and outputs of the project
? Reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere
? Protection of the natural environment
? Improved air quality ,clean air
? Minimize the risk of climate change
? Reduce global warming
? Reduction in respiratory health problems
? Valuable foreign exchange being saved
? Increase in production
? Use of renewable form of energy in their production
The location of the project is Mafoota Dist., St James. Mafoota is located approximately 23 km from the resort town of Montego Bay. They are located in the Great River Watershed and a tributary of the Great River flows through the community. There is a forest reserve which is manned by the forestry department. Mafoota has other major districts on its outskirts Mt Horeb, Roehampton, Anchovy, Richmond Hill and Cambridge. The land on which the project is operated is leased by the cooperative from the commissioner of lands

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Community members own the project as they have bought shares in the Cooperative and therefore benefit directly from all projects that the Cooperative undertakes. They play critical roles in project implementation and are responsible for sustainability and public education
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
The Cooperative has a strong marketing link with some of the major hotels in the tourism industry and this will enhance the financial viability and sustainability of the project
