Establishment of community woodlots in Zuguruma comminty, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria
The project, which is community-oriented, will effectively put an end to the indiscriminate and uncontrolled means of fuelwood extraction in the selected communities and adjoining Kainji Lake National Park. Indiscriminate fuelwood extraction undermines broad conservation goals in the project area and poses serious challenges to conservation management, to create a resource base that meets the need of the people in the quest for a sustainable livelihood.Specific activities in this project include; Community level sensitization, education and advocacy outreach; Nursery establishment; Raising of indigenous fuel wood species in the nursery; Land preparation; Planting of fuel wood seedlings in permanent field plots; Monitoring and post planting operations. The groups involved in carrying out this project: The village council and Community leaders; Women and Youth groups; Community-Based Organizations (CBOs); Local Government Authorities (LGA) and State Ministries of Environment and Forest Resources.
