Mwenyekondo Sustainable Waste Management Practices Project, Lilongwe City Council
Mwenyekondo Sustainable Waste Management Practices Project, Lilongwe City Council
Improper disposal and burning of domestic waste cause air pollution and harm to human health. The situation is rampant in Mwenyekondo and sorrounding communities.Burning of plastic, rubber or painted materials which creates poisonous fumes is rapidly being practised by most community members in the highly populated low income area.though a research done by the ministry of health in 2008,it was discovered that more than 25 % of the outpatient cases residing in Mwenyekondo area were a result of environmental health related diseases caused by the harzadous fumes.

These diseases are caused by the following factors:
1. lack of knowledge on proper and efficient waste disposal management practices
2.cultural beliefs that constrain the adoption of new and improved environmental hygiene and sanitation strategies
3. lack of infrastructures for proper and sustained waste disposal management

Projects Main Objective
The main objective is to improve waste management practices by reducing reckless disposal and burning of waste that leads to environmental pollution and land degradation within Mwenyekondo.
-to promote efficient and effective collection, reuse, recycling, treatment and disposal of domestic and municipal waste.
-to create public awareness about waste generation, reduction, reuse, traetment, recycling and other aspects of waste management.

Implementation Strategy
-awareness raising ansd sensitization campaigns in the project area.
-provision of waste disposal facilities within project area.
-promotion of environmentallly friendly alternative livelihood options for rural communities with emphasis on small scale businesses.
-build a critical mass of communities able and willing to sustainably manage and generate benefits from waste.

ProjectOoutcomes
-reduced incidences of bonfires in the community
-improved management of waste through proper collection, selection, reuse and recycling
-user friendly local dsposal structures installed in strategic sites such as lodges and motels, restaurants and canteens, shops and groceries.
-increased awareness on waste management issues.

Sustainability of Project Results
-capacity building of community-level structures tends to enhance ownership of project activities and results, this ownership enhances value and need to sustain initiatives
-intergration of IGAs in waste management likely to enhance sustainability as extra cash income to a household tends to motivate players to sustain initiatives
-SWAMPs success in its pilot phase may likely attract other donors to replicate and scale up the current initiative.
