LIVELIHOOD DIVERSIFICATION AND IMPROVEMENT –Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy in Addelies Watershed, Mettu Woreda, Oromia Region

This project plans to enhance the adaptation capacity and resilience of poor households to climate change impacts and reduce threats to the ecosystems in the target area. Its specific objectives are focused on improving household income through improved honey production, promoting eco-friendly micro-irrigation schemes for high value production systems; and protecting forests and household health through fuel wood saving technology. It also focuses on enhancing the understanding of local decision makers and technical staffs from government line departments on community based climate change adaptation strategies and the significance of its integration into development planning process. Moreover, the beneficiary communities and the governmental partners will be informed about the contribution of improved fuel saving stoves in reducing fuel wood consumption and /or rate of deforestation and indoor pollution.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

A number of project activites, such as bee keeping, producing fuel saving stoves and implementing improved ginger production systems, are designed to develop long term income generating activities.

Notable Community Participation

Project activities are designed to benefit the community and rely on their time and skills to be implemented. Community members also participate in various trainings in their own kebele and exchange visits with others.

Capacity - Building Component

Training is provided on improved horticultural practices to reduce land degradation, and 10 cooperative members (mainly youth) have been trained in stove production.

Project Results

* Project activities have reduced poor people's dependancy on natural resources.
* A number of initiatives have been put in place to do this such as ginger production.
* Equipment to produce ginger has been supplied to 210 households.
* 110 community members have been trained in horticultural crop production.
* Trained individuals have been provided with vegetable seed in order to plant pepper, cabbage, onion and tomato on their farms.
* 55 community members have been trained in modern apicultue techniques to modernise apiculture at a community level.
* 110 improved beehives have been purchased and distributed to 55 individuals, with accessories to produce honey.
* 30 community members have received government training on climate change adaptation strategies.
* 169 farmers participated in best practice and experience sharing visits.
* 10 youth formed micro-enterprise team for manufacturing the fuel saving stoves.
* 210 stoves were produced by the team and distributed to 210 women headed households.
