- The project reviewed the situation concerning landfill gas emissions and their climate change impact, and identified methods of combating this phenomenon on local level.
- A business plan for electric energy generation from landfill gas was developed.
- 40 kW gas electric power generator was installed and put into operation at Luhansk solid domestic waste (SDW) landfill which allowed to demonstrate the possibility of electric energy generation from landfill gas.
- The SDW landfill personnel were engaged in the generator installation and operation works.
- Reduction of emissions from electric energy generation is 258 t CO2e per year whereas conventional electricity consumption decreased by 10 kW per hour.
- Reduction of emissions due to methane recycling is 7,918 t CO2e per year.
- Overall reduction of emissions due to installation of the gas electric power generator is 8,175 t CO2e per year.
- Implementation of the project resulted in decrease in energy consumption costs over 44,000 UAH (about 6285 USD) per year.
- Electricity produced by the generator is used for heating of the SDW landfill work areas in the cold period of the year where 54 persons are working.
- Public awareness was raised on the climate change issues and the opportunity of using landfill gas as an energy carrier by holding 14 public events involving 1500 persons: 1 project presentation, 2 round-tables, 2 public hearings, and 5 environmental lessons.
- 1987 persons participated in the project (907 women aged 25-55, 780 men aged 26-60, and 300 children aged 7-18).
