3.83 ha of natural color trees of the project will be known by various meeting of the project. In the past, people have known that mainstream source of raw material for natural color getting from forest.
Expenditure of the project manages follow the GEF rule and project implement as planning.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Natural color dyeing is being with Lao people long time mainly in rural area, because target villagers have basic knowledge the kind of trees for each color. Three Target villagers of Keng Gnao, Nongveng and Phearphai will be upgrade knowledge of natural color.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Natural color planting can be help local people to get income, the project explore list the kind of natural color trees in local area and import other kind from other area. This activity people who planting can supply the product to textile handicraft group such as: bank of tress, seed, fruit leaves and flower.
The project set up bore hole for color trees, besides that utilize for project aim people it was apply for other activities and need their livelihood.
Notable Community Participation
The project purpose to prevent and planting natural color trees the project preparing step of planting by cooperating with target villagers, Before started activity the project had motivated people sharing project , there are 15 households 94 persons by 51 women form 3 villages have jointed project.
Capacity - Building Component
Villagers were advised technique planting and conservation natural color trees by the project, they understand process of planting and can be trained to other villagers.
Gender Focus
Women participates the project more than 50 % although this activity is common with rural women handicraft group and any way women have interested this activity.
Project Results
The project created the method of planning well, even not many household to be targeted by project because they were discourage to participate especially Phearphai village because of the area was taken by force from rubber trees project of the province. Natural color trees is not only use for handicraft group but equally important in sustainable management of terrestrial environment by avoiding further exploitation of immediate natural source of colour plant.
The project finish planting trees and colour plant but some species could not be planted due to their seasonal requirement. The purpose of this activity is allocate land to villagers enable them to grow variety of colour plant. fund was used to acquire organic insecticide and fertilizer and also clearing of grass. Plots were set up in kilometer 17 and Kilometer 42 but some wire fences were missing or taken. The project managed to distribute and delivered seedlings to the members and plants were taken to the plots. A study tour was of organized at Chun Mai Thai Farm, Phetchabun, Thailand to familiarized project proponent in silk production processes from organic mulberry planting, rearing of silk worm, quality control and package of silk thread. The project is hoping to send members of the project to the farm to undergo training and workshop to learn more about medium to large scale silk production and be qualified in the future. The project is hoping to adapt the same techniques as what they have done in Thailand. Another place that was visited by the project members is the community-based project set up by an NGO in Khonkean Thailand, the project team learned some insights on how the NGO initiated project become successful and also an overview of their marketing strategy for silk products. Major difficulties in the course of the project is the seasonality of plant species, some colour plants only flower in certain times of the year and can only be grown in cold weather specially in the northern species. There is also lack of skills in planting certain colour plant species. The project will mitigate the mentioned difficulties by growing colour plant in other areas and learn more techniques and skill how to grow seasonal plant species.
