Reforestation to combat climate change
Reforestation to combat climate change
The main goal of the project is to restore forest suffered from fires and increase overall forest rehabilitation potential in Dobryanka district, Chernigiv oblast with the purpose to decrease climate change impacts as one of the strategic priorities of GEF and SGP, reduce CO2 emissions and create forest fire barriers. Rehabilitation of forest and setting up of fire barriers are very topical and urgent issues of that region because there were 27 cases of forest fires on the territory of 13,03 ha in 2009 and 30 cases of fires on the area of 4,08 ha in 2010. Due to the GEF SGP and co-financing enterprise 200 ha of forest will be restored and over 1,6 million of pine-tree saplings will be planted.

In long term perspective rehabilitation of forest will led to reduction of CO2 emissions. 1 ha of pine-tree forest reduces CO2 emissions approximately by 1 ton a year. So, 200 ha of forest will reduce CO2 emissions by 200 ton a year in the future.

Specific objectives are the following:
- Awareness raising and dissemination of information on damages of forest fires, methods of forest fires prevention and benefits from rehabilitation of forests. Moreover, attraction of public to forest rehabilitation activities with socio-economic and strengthen-capacity purposes;
- Introduction of educational and training program on the basis of ?Green class? with the purpose of creation of new generation of environment-aware youth;
- Rehabilitation of forest and setting up of forest fire barriers with the mission of ??2 emission reduction in long term perspective.

Outputs and indicators of the project are the following:
- Ecological campaign on awareness raising and dissemination of information are carried out among 2000 citizens in Dobryznka district;
- 120 unemployed and poverty-stricken citizens are attracted to activities on rehabilitation of forest;
- 305 pupils of Dobryanka Secondary School are involved into educational and training program on the basis of ?Green class? ? 10 seminars on environmental issues are carries out in the class and ecological electronic library is formed;
- 200 ha are covered by young forest;
- System of fire prevention are created on the area of 200 ha;
- Establishment of community-based ecological organization are initiated by the project.
