Ozón XXI "Living Laboratory"

The goal of the project is to implement a pilot solution for complex approach of energy supply solutions for housing sector. The project will work with wide range of stakeholders ? habitants, municipality, academic sector as well as business sector in finding an optimal way for installation of innovative technologies for heating and insulation in housing sector. The project pilots installation of thermal pump for heating with the measures for motivation and change of attitude of local citizens towards their environment as well as purchase of energy services. The investment will be implemented in building with majority of elderly or unemployed habitants.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Project parameters are set up in a way that will ensure sustainability of the measures (i.e. the stable payments for building management services while all energy and revitalization measures are implemented). It means the measures are not only complex but effectively set up. One of the measures is online management of the energy consumption. Such a complex solution is unique in Slovakia with payback period of 10-12 years.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Project promotion is two-fold. First it aims at promoting the measures in easy language to target recipients - flat owners. The project introduced the term "EKO-pension" which means to provide not only high quality property but also cleaner environment to the next generation. Second, such complex solutions are promoted at various expert events and by involving university students in undertaking their thesis at the project site.

Notable Community Participation

The project measures require participation of local inhabitants - owners of the flats within the building to agree and pay for the proposed measures. In addition, members of municipal parliament will be involved into the project activities in order to reach the support of municipality and to ensure in cooperation with the municipality and local inhabitants the revitalization of surrounding. The revitalization will done by local people and this will result in better ownership of the investment as well as increase motivation of remaining flat owners from other buildings to start with similar measures. The aim is to motivate owners of all 6 buildings for implementation of energy efficient measures with the use of RES and to become ?Energy self sufficient living zone".

Capacity - Building Component

The project should support increasing capacities of different groups, i.e. heating system designers, municipal planners, university and vocational students by providing advice.

The project works with members of municipal parliament and targets on changing attitude of municipality in energy planning - i.e. towards complex and effective energy solutions in housing buildings.

Project Results

Project "Living laboratory" intended to apply the heat pump technology in the housing sector which has the greatest potential for mitigating the climate change. In addition to the pump were during the project installed also solar technologies and other renewable sources of energy what resulted in an overall reduction of CO2 emissions by 65% (50,3 tonnes of CO2), reduction of primary energy resources required to produce energy by 80% and consequently the reduction of costs on energy services by 70%.
Implementation of the project has created 12 jobs positions for a period of one year and overall project employed 30 workers per month.
In pursuing the objectives of the project were the participants (especially the older generation) informed about the benefits of using renewable energy technologies what changed their suspicious attitude and has contributed to the attractiveness and increase in the use of renewable technologies.
Financial savings of around 18,000 ? were subsequently transferred to the fund of repairs and maintenance which can be later used to either repay the loan or invest into the advanced modification of the area.
